how long did it take for you to get an interview.......

i was complete on the 6th of october. i know i probably wont hear from them for a while.

I'm from CA... and I'm not sure when I was complete but I got the postcard like less than a month ago I think.

Well, they're accepting more out-of-staters than Oregonians... not solely Californians.
 
I don't go to OHSU (maybe next fall? *hopeful*) but I did grow up in Portland and I worked at OHSU for two years, plus my mom works there so if you PM me, I might be able to answer some of your questions....

What makes you think it rains in Portland? j/k. two days ago it rained like hell and today it is 80 degrees with 125% humidity. Yep, the air is supersaturated with water. If I run fast enough I can make it rain around me even though it is 80 and sunny.
 
i live in portland, and it's great. really, i can think of very few better places to live. the people are cool, it's beautiful, the climate's nice provided that you don't hate rain, and rent's pretty reasonable. you can also pm me if you have any questions. good luck!

Haha, so true!!!! But don't expend any energy just yet, it's supposed to rain again tomorrow! lol 🙂 Ahhh, Portland, gotta love it!!!! I don't live there now, but if I can come back and spend the rest of my life in Portland I would be one happy girl :clap:
 
I went to school near Portland for the last 4 years. Even though I live in Hawaii, I absolutely loved it there. Plus, I have family in Portland. I really miss living there, and am praying for an interview to OHSU.
 
It rains a fair amount but, in general, the rain is vastly exaggerated.
 
I interviewed at OHSU last year. It was the most enjoyable interview out of the my three. It consists of two interviews (usually). They rate you in like five categories, maturity, communication, health care exp, community or something like that. I was asked difficult questions that made me think, but nothing uncomfortable. The one interviewer, Dr. Beal, does many of the interviews and she will asks questions that she wants real answers from, like, what did you learn from volunteering at X. Sounds easy, but in an interview it can be a difficult question. I worked at OHSU for five years and narrowly missed getting accepted, in my opinion its a great school with a great city to go along. how big is the ohsu class size? also, i know that they place a huge emphasis on primary care/rural medicine... but how hard is it to specialize? are they receptive to that sort of ambition? what majority of students are from oregon?

Sacrament can probably answer in more detail, but if I recall correctly from my interview last year the class size is 102. OHSU is the tertiary facility for all of Oregon so they get all the rural referrals from the state. They also have students do a preceptorship in rural medicine. They are very supportive of those who want to go into rural medicine but they are not going to give you a thumbs down if you want to do something else. Oh, they also do medical research (hence the name change from Oregon Health Sciences U to Oregon Health AND Science U). In the last couple of years they raised the fees for Oregonians and lowered the nonresident fees, so that tipped the scales a little towards nonresidents. The majority of students (~70%?) are still from Oregon. They used to have preference for Oregonians and other western state residents from states without medical schools (i.e. Idaho, etc.) but I don't think they do that anymore.

P.S. I had lunch with three 4th year students who were applying to anesthesia, surgery and psych residencies. Not a rural primary doc-to-be in the bunch.

I'm an MS1 at OHSU so i can probably answer some of your questions also...

Our class size is 108... they increased it this year for whatever reason. We're about 50/50 oregon residents/non residents... 40/60 male/female...

Sacrament might know the stats a little better than I do, but I believe our Dean of Student Affairs told me last week that around 60 percent of last year's MS4 students went into a non-primary care residency... maybe i'm exaggerating, but the point is that though OHSU has a commitment to preparing primary care physicians, there is certainly no discouragement of those wanting to specialize.

This is pretty accurate. OHSU has a reputation as a primary care school, but I can't say that I've noticed it. That is, there is absolutely no "push" to go into a primary care field, and for the last couple of years the majority of graduates have gone into specialty training. There is a required third-year rural rotation (as city-girl mentioned), which is fairly unique, and which is an attempt to get students interested in rural primary care. But even that can sometimes be tweaked for those simply uninterested in being a PCP: I know of a few people who arranged to have their rural rotation actually be a rural surgery rotation.

OHSU is an up-and-coming school; while it doesn't get a lot of press, it quietly is doing some cutting-edge, world-recognized research in a variety of fields. Correspondingly, research funding at OHSU has increased at a greater rate than any other medical school in the U.S. over the few years. A new medical research facility is being built on campus, along with a large new patient care facility, and down by the waterfront they are preparing for several new biomedical research structures. OHSU wants to be recognized as a top research school as well as primary care school, and I expect they will achieve that in the years to come. This has more implications for the lowly medical student than you might expect. I, for example, had no trouble whatsoever getting a funded research position last summer.
 
what opps are available to students who are interested in pursuin community based medicine...serving the underserved
are there free clinics in the area that students can get involved with?

I talked to them today, and they have been interviewing for 6 weeks, and have offered 1 acceptance already. They described themselves as "rolling," which I think is different than last year, but I could be wrong.

Maybe if they actually sent me a secondary, I'll feel inclined to join this thread. They're the only school out of 25 that I haven't received a secondary. Either they're REALLY slow or they hate me.

They're REALLY slow, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't hate you.

I'm waiting for their postcard that tells me they have all my stuff. I expect to get it sometime in the summer.😡
 
How slow are we talking about? I sent in my secondary about 10 days ago and checked the box saying I prefer an interview during Christmas break. I hope they don't throw my application out for doing that, since Christmas break is coming up in a couple of weeks. How long did most of you wait for your interviews?
 
I finally received the info to access OHSU's online secondary in the mail today after a long wait. I noticed the cost of tuition is a steep $33k/yr for nonresidents. Does anyone know if OHSU one of those states that let you establish residency after a year or are you pretty much stuck paying $33k/yr for the whole four years?

When I first started applying, I made sure most schools were in the $30k/yr or less range and just getting in was my primary concern. Now that I'm actually interviewing at places and it seems like I've got a decent shot at getting accepted to at least a few schools, money seems like more and more of a factor for me.
 
Same here. After getting an acceptance, money became a big deal for me. To answer your question, OHSU, much as I'd have liked to go there, doesn't let you establish residency...if you matriculate as an out-of-stater, you're stuck with that all four years. Bummer.
 
I called OHSU, and they officially sent me the secondary as of December 9. My AMCAS transmitted 11/10, so it took about a month. I am an Oregon resident, but since I am in Canada I persuaded them to email me the application, so I can complete it before the holidays. I have a pdf, so if anyone is curious about it, I can email it to you-PM me.

I just noticed, OHSU isn't all that cheap even for in-state residents. Are they into making money or what?

yup. they are more interested in attracting wealthy out-of-staters than native oregonians. look at their interview schedule. Most of the early interviews are out of state, they save oregonians for the waitlist. ( Ask any current MS1 from oregon, she/he will tell you they were on the waitlist before they got in, and they had a very late interview. )

It is related to their status as a private institution. Most of the USA still thinks it is still a state school, so my interviewers always laughed when I said I hadn't even interviewed yet..o.0 (You haven't been accepted there yet? <insert belly laugh>). The reality is I was accepted almost everywhere i applied; except for OHSU, my top choice and native school. -.-

So, I think I have a right to be bitter at Californians who are forking over their daddy's 35k to sit in my classroom, ride my #8 bus, swim in my pool, and work out in my gym. (All built with our tax dollars). And run on my Council Crest paths, sip coffee on 23rd st, take hwy34 to the beach....the list is endless. For outofstaters, consider that you truly don't belong there, and your presence is an unfortunate by-product of greed.

If you're reading this from the main library, get up and look out the windows. Pretty much everything you see was built with our tax money (except doernbechers & shriners.) From what I can tell, the number of stories like mine are greater than the number of friends who actually got in.
