Hello all. I was wondering if anyone had any furthur insight/thoughts/opinions into the OHSU program. I interviewed there pretty early in the season, and so its been a while, but I really liked it (it seems like everyone does!). I'm trying to get a grasp on resident happiness (not feeling too scutted out/availability of attendings) as I feel like I've heard mixed messages. Did anyone get good specifics on their call? I have the basics written down but does anyone remember if they get a post call day since the VA call is overnight and supposedly home call?? It seemed fairly frequent (q5ish?) to go without post call days... I appreciate any thoughts anyone is willing to share

and so as not to be seen as simply a taker and not a giver, and in hopes of sparking some discussion, Ill share some of my thoughts on the program first (ill leave out specifics on sched/call that i have to spare you, but if you're interested, feel ree to ask):

pros: the main ones that stand out for me are location, location, location! Portland is a pretty cool town, in my opinion. Seems to be pretty affordable for that part of the country. Also, the close location of most of the rotation sites is a major plus, the facilities were pretty nice and that sky tram thing is pretty cool. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with all of the faculty that interviewed me. Dr. Rosen seems like a very genuine guy who is VERY interested in making residency the most educational experience possible for his residents. OHSU provided the majority of fellowship opportunities which is a huge plus. Plenty of research available, though not forced on you. The intercultural psych program was very unique and in my opinion, very cool.

cons: ive heard a lot about the lack of diversity in the population in portland. Lots of time spent at the VA, though this is a pro or con depending on how you see it, i still havent decided how i feel about that part. I suppose the rainy weather is bothersome for some. The inpt psy is in a separate building from the main hospital, which I've never cared for, but this is also subject to opinion.

The two factors left that Im undecided about remain call schedule, which seems on the heavier side (q5 for pretty much all of 1st and 2nd yr), and resident happiness, which is always heard to judge..

I wish I could help you more, but I didn't write down the details of the call schedule, either. I got the impression that residents were pretty willing to respond to emails, so I'm sure it's OK to contact them about call. I did get the impression that VA call wasn't super stressful, so maybe not having a postcall day isn't a big deal? Other than that, my impressions matched yours. Portland is a great place to live, and honestly, the rain's not a big deal because you can still get outside in spite of it.

As far as resident happiness, yeah, that is hard to judge. I read them as pretty low key in general, so they weren't the type of people who would come off as super excited about the program even if they were really happy with it. I wonder if that's more of a statement about the region than anything else.
