What's the deal with Oregon Health and Science University....are they just very very slow? Has anyone received a secondary from them?😀

I haven't heard anything at all from them. I'm an out-of-stater but let me know if you get anything from them. It's the only school that hasn't even sent a recipt of AMCAS.

You will soon discover that applying to OHSU will be one of the more irritating experiences of your life.

Sacrament,

Some state school will more seriously consider an out of state applicant if he/she has significant ties to that state. I went to High School in Oregon.....do you know if this will help me?

Oh, how do you like it there?

Every year it becomes less and less important to OHSU whether you have any connection to Oregon whatsoever. It is because OHSU is not what I would call a "state school" anymore... I'm not sure that technically it even is. They are essentially privatized, and receive very little funding from the state. Accordingly, their class has, in recent years, been made up of more and more out-of-staters. As far as official policy, this is what I heard, I have no idea if it is true: the policy is to make the initial interview cut-off lower for in-staters, but from the interview onward everybody is treated equally regardless of residence.

I like OHSU. Obviously I have no frame of reference for comparison, but neither do I have any significant complaints. I think the curriculum is better than the way most schools do it, I enjoy the weather for the most part, and campus is nice.

Do a search under 'OHSU'. I think one of the threads last year was called OHSU=Frustration Station.

Good luck!

BTW, I agree with Sacrament about the residence/ties to Oregon.

since you're from Denver (out of state) you probably have a good chance of acceptance. OHSU is one of the few med schools on the west coast where it is actually an advantage to be from out of state. This is because they are a private school now, and are trying to make their program more profitable.

just got the sec. invite today by snail mail...and i'm out of state (california) so there is hope =)

It's common knowledge for Oregon residents - the current state budget crisis has resulted in OHSU being mostly cut off from state funding. They might not admit it officially, but OHSU is mostly a private school nowadays (and they wonder why Oregon has a shortage of physicians?).

About two years ago, OHSU increased its class size and designated those positions for out-of-state applicants. As of last year, non-Oregon residents needed to have a 3.5+ GPA and 30+ MCAT to be considered, and then were on a level playing field with in-staters. This is a very different approach than at most in-state schools (ie U Wash in Seattle takes 96% of its class from in-state and WICHE (sp?) residents).

So, if you are out of state and meet their "cut-off" criteria, you have an as good or better chance of getting into OHSU than if you were an Oregon resident.

Just a note I received a secondary with a 3.04 GPA and a 32 MCAT. I also applied MD/MPH which helps your chances a bit.

From the website (this has been changed from last year):
__________________________
Applicants are selected for admission regardless of race, gender, age, religion, national origin, color, marital status or disabilities. The School of Medicine gives preference to the following applicants:

Residents of Oregon.
Nonresidents of Oregon who fit into one or more of the following categories:
WICHE-Certified applicants from Montana and Wyoming.
Members of underrepresented ethnic/racial groups as defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges.
Those applying to the M.D./Ph.D. and M.D./M.PH. Combined Degree Programs.
Applicants with superior achievements, such as academics, related experiences, etc.

So if you're a MD/PHD, you have the same "preference" as an in-state resident. The GPA/MCAT cut-off were published on the website, but they seem to be gone now. I know that I copied and pasted it to another post last year about OHSU. You can probably find it by searching the forums.

Last year at the interviews, they told us that once non-residents had made the secondary cut (GPA/MCAT), they were at a level playing field with residents.

Anyway you look at it, non-residents have as good of chance as anyone else getting into OHSU once they have been interviewed. Check out their website if you want to read more about it. You can also call the admissions office and ask about out-of-state admissions.
