Hey guys,

So I have been accepted at Pacific Northwest University and have a deposit there as well, so I'm good to go no matter what. My dilemma is that I just interviewed at AZCOM and really liked it and would probably attend if accepted. I'm considering writing a letter of intent to them and have already sent my thank you notes, however, I'm a little worried that if i commit to AZCOM I will get an interview from another school I would prefer to go to that may be long shots. Is this a valid concern? It is getting a little late in the cycle to expect an interview invite and would likely be interviewing for a waitlist spot right?

Any thought/comments/advice and my general situation would be greatly appreciated:
-PNWU vs AZCOM (leaning towards AZCOM)
-probability of receiving any more interview invites from Drexel, Tuoro-CA, PCOM, and Western U

Hey!

first of all, CONGRATS!!!
secondly, u r not a lone! many of us have faced a similar situation..
too bad DO school deposited are all so expensive...
it is late in the cycle.. but if u did get other interviews.. i really would encourage you to go..
in the long run these deposit won't seem that much ..
wut really matter is finding a school that you love and fits in.
just my 2 cents
best of luck in ur endeavor!

I'm not really crazy about letters of intent, "I promise I'll go to your school unless for some reason I change my mind." As far as getting interviews this late, well I guess it depends on the school, but I think with schools like PCOM if you haven't heard anything by now you probably are not going to get an interview (I'm in that boat too). Though if you do feel compelled to send a letter of intent, it is not going to hurt your chance of acceptance just don't go back on it.

See the way that I look at it, a letter of intent is a binding agreement (not legal but ethically) and ya I just wanted to verify that I probably wasnt gonna hear from other schools

According to the adcoms on another thread, a letter of intent has no sway for med school acceptance, in fact, LizzyM calls it a "Valentine." It is a different story for residency and the match.

I was told specifically by an admissions counselor that it would help.

Can anybody comment on the other stuff?

By their admissions counselor or your admissions counselor cause you see that's two different things.

A letter of intent certainly does work and I'm living, breathing, off to med school proof. However, I also didn't just send one that said "I promise I'll go to your school" - there was also some information specific to me and I knew would be of interest to the school. Anyway, what I am saying is - if you feel like it's the school for you, give it a shot.

In regards to PNWU vs. AZCOM - I got into PNWU as well and felt very warm and at home there. However, even though everyone says the accreditation stuff is under control, it still makes me nervous mainly because they don't have a long standing history of kids doing well. AZCOM on the other hand has an amazing history of their students and their high first choice residency placement percentage was big for me. They also do really well on the boards, which is something PNWU just doesn't have the historical data yet to prove. However, Arizona is way too hot for me and I didn't get the welcome home feeling from them - but this is a very personal feeling that could be totally different for you. First wait to see if you get into AZCOM (I was waitlisted, so it was out the question for me) and while you're waiting for other interviews, send a letter of intent to AZCOM if you really love it more than PNWU. This is your future and you can't let it ride on losing a deposit, feeling bad about retracting a letter of intent, or waiting around for that next interview. Best of luck to you!

You're right in saying it's a long shot to expect interviews at other places this late in the season. Med school admissions is so much of a crapshoot though that I don't want to completely shoot you down. Hope for the best but plan for the worst. In this case though, since you're already in, the worst ain't all that bad 🙂

Submit your letter of intent, and if you get into AZCOM, cancel the check at PNWU unless theyve already deposited it (be sure to let them know you've done so).

That check was processed in December so that a lost $1000. In the grand sceme of things though, thats not so bad if I get into AZCOM.

I am definitely not holding my breath for any other schools at this point, I just wish they had the courtesy to reject me hahaha.
