Is it ok to use a slightly modified version of a blog comment I made a few weeks ago, in an academic paper? It's relevant to the topic of the paper, so I'm not worried about that. But, I'm wondering If it would be considered plagiarism to use essentially the same wording in two different places.

Well you could either cite a blog and have your source sound incredibly incredible, or you could plagiarize it.

I'd avoid it. A blog is not a good source for academic papers and not citing it could cause problems b/c it'd be difficult or impossible to prove (to the world) you wrote it in the first place. Rewrite it w/ completely different words -- shouldn't be hard if it was your idea in the first place....

Usually you would only use a blog posting for analysis of the content, not as a source (e.g. this is an example of someone who exhibits the kind of behavior I am discouraging in this paper).

I agree with this one...

If it's a blog post that you made, then there's no need to cite it at all. Just say what it is you're trying to say, citing whatever references you used.

However, if you're trying to add legitimacy to something that you don't have sources for, I doubt citing your own blog would be very effective in that regard.

Go ahead and use the blog...feel free to utilize any text messages (only ones that use 'ur' and 'cuz') and also include any youtube videos (especially if there's any rap or metal soundtrack to it). My 8 year old niece really likes crayons and would readily illustrate any tables or diagrams you might need...she could use the practice. 😉

It's a blog comment that YOU made? You can't plagiarize yourself.

actually, you can

if you copy/paste something you previously have written and present it as if it's new work, that is considered plagarism. however, you can cite your own previous work and avoid this issue

this and also after you publish the copyright is then owned by the journal.
