I will just post some stats and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Upon applying(hopefully matriculation) to med schools, the following stats will apply:

Age: 40
Bachelors: From a pretty highly regarded private college, having 2 years at a CC. I will have taken only the 1 year of biology and statistics at the CC(A's in all 3).

13 years as a paramedic, the last ~ 8 years as a critical care paramedic.

Approx. 500 hours shadowing a D.O.

GPA: ~ 3.5 overall and ~ 3.4 science.

During my school time I will have worked 60+ hours a week. Had some W's 10-15 years ago, but last 3 years were very good. (all A's and B's).
I havent yet done any voluenteering. Any ideas? I am a pretty good standerizes test taker, so not overly worried about MCAT. What are my chances for D.O. school? I really love the osteopathic philosophy. Any ideas on bettering my application or any other ideas ? Thanks for your help.

Get a 25 on the MCAT and you're in. D.O. schools love non-traditional students. I just got an acceptance a couple of weeks ago with a lower GPA than yours, and I've been out of school for 4 years. Really, you have nothing to worry about.

Concentrate on the MCAT and start requesting letters of recommendation. Make sure you have all of your pre-reqs done; some schools require socio science and other odd things. Apply early to a few schools you would attend (try some state schools like Michigan and UMDNJ) and I think you will do well.
Good Luck

Funny you should mention michigan. I am from the metro detroit area and MSUCOM is high on my list. But, I will go anywhere I need to go. Do I need to do some vol.? I obviously have tons of clinical experience and lots of shadowing hours.

Talk to Medic170. He will give you the right answer about MSUCOM and being EMT non-trad applicant.

Or wait till he shows up. He usual peaks his big head in here every now and then.

I don't think you need to do any volunteering at this point; with 500 hours shadowing a DO if you can't make an informed decision on entering Osteopathic Medicine we are all in trouble. I would sit back, take the MCAT, make sure you pre-reqs and letters are in order and let the torturous waiting game begin. If you are really bored and have time try taking up a language, Spanish or French are good. In my opinion it is one of the overlooked things that impress committees and it will be invaluable later in your career. There was not one interview that I went on where my fluency in Spanish didn’t impress. You should do fine. MSUCOM is a fantastic school and I am sure Medic170 will chime in soon enough on his experience with them or you can PM him about it.

You might want a little higher for most of the public D.O. schools (possibly a 26-28.)

Oh and by the way, do not listen to anyone that tells you CC classes are no good. CC IS easier but NOT because of poor quality, it is because of the small class sizes and professors who dedicate themselves to teaching, not research. This came up in my interviews and it was no problem. Admissions committees aren't stupid they spend uncountable numbers of hours looking at applicants for medical school! They know what it what so take anything a pre-med tells you for what it's worth. The most brilliant man that I have ever met was a professor in my community college and he taught me things that helped me glide through my upper level science classes at Rutgers. Your upper level science and classes at university plus MCAT will prove that CC was not a “fluke.”

-I personally know few applicants with lower GPAs, getting in to DO. So I don't think your GPA is a problem.
-Of course, MCAT is the name of the game. Do well in MCAT.
-Since you have healthcare experience, I don't think volunteering matters all that for non-traditional applicants like you.
-Try to get a good LOR from (preferrably) DO or MD.
-APPLY EARLY. You tend to increase your chance of getting in significantly just by applying early.
Good luck.

You are golden with a decent MCAT

Looks pretty darn good. Don't sweat it! If you want to see where you really fit in you might want to check out www.medschoolstats.com, so you can see schools avg GPA and MCAT for accepted students.

Planning to try and MD schools? You're not far off for a lot of them. Actually, your GPA is right on average for a lot of 'em.

Hey FUTR_DR!! not sure if you were aware of this or not, but MSUCOM is having an open house Friday April 22, 2005 from 1p-5p, you should check them out. If you go to their website, you will be able to see the flyer and get some more vital information. I usually just type in Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Hope this is helpful to you, and hope you can make it next friday. When I attended the event last year I had a blast. I mean I toured the school, sat in on lectures, and attended live OMM sessions, so you may want to attend so you can get some questions answered and talk with admission advisors.
