When do we take the OKAPs - end of first year? Are the OKAPs both written and oral? So basically, we just take the OKAPs once (end of first year) or do we take other standardized ophtho exams (besides in service) throughout residency? Just wondering, thanks!

Everyone (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and some 4th years) take the OKAP in April. Your score is compared to your peers. There is no oral component.

Iowa, however, has oral exams at the end of each rotation. These are fun because they simulate the oral board exams.

Thanks Andrew! So we take the OKAPs each year that we are in ophtho residency...guess it'll be Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 all over again 😱
