wow, that's very impressive 😀 .
for my future classmates, has anyone started to look for apartments yet? i'd like to stay somewhere near downtown/bricktown area with a view of the skyline (im cool with studio/efficiency apartment). does anyone have any suggestions? does anyone plan on staying in the university village, i kind of want my own place next year and the studio apartments in university village are near impossible to get.
looking forward to next year.

There's a 5-6 story brownstone in a historic neighborhood about 1 mile from campus called The Aberdeen that a lot of med students live at. It's been renovated and is really nice. They also have an apartment complex and some townhouses, but the brownstone would afford you the best view. It's probably expensive ($700?)but it comes all bills paid (except for cable and phone). That neighborhood is also nice to jog in.....

I was in that class too!

Hello everyone, I wanted to say hi and Ive been reading a lot of these posts lately and some of them are pretty insightful. Im looking forward to seeing you guys in the fall. I also wanted to get the OU thread towards the front, because I had to sift through several pages to get there this time. As for all you basketball fans out there, how about those Cowboys. I noticed someone predicted OU in the final four. Too bad, Utah's a pretty tough team. Better luck next year 😉. Lastly, I am interested to hear any input on good/affordable OKC apartments. Thanks.

haha that was me who predicted OU in the final four..hehe

man, i wonder when the OU waitlist movement is going start...
i heard somewhere from this thread that all the 46 on the waitlist got in last year?? how about the year before last? anyone knows?

oh last year, the earliest waitlist acceptance was around end of march-early april, I believe.

From what I was told by the admissions staff, last year was out of the norm. They did say to expect 1/2 to 3/4 of the waitlist to gain acceptance. Also, don't get your hopes up for any waitlist movement anytime soon. My guess is anything before May would be rare.

Do you happen to know the streets the brownstone is on? I am also looking for a place in the fall. I want to be near campus, but I don't want to be in the "scary" parts. Anyone have any suggestions? I was kind of thinking in the area north of 50th and west of broadway extension/I-235. That pretty much narrows down nothing. But if anyone needs a roommate, I definately need one. Thanks guys.

Are you a guy or a girl?
I am on the waitlist for both a studio and a 2 bedroom at the university
village apartments and may be looking for a roomate if anyone is interested.

Girl - How expensive are the university apartments?

I was just watching a news report about OU's new "dry-campus" policy in norman. I was wondering if this extends to the hsc campus as well. It seems that I've heard the school has a little shindig where they buy kegs and food and stuff every month or so for the hsc students.. do they still do this?
Just curious

Does anyone happen to know whether the MODs are assigned randomly or alphabetically? And, will we get notice a few weeks before school starts as to who is in our MOD? Might be nice to get to know some of our future mod-mates... 😀

Yeah they still have these "gatherings" on the HSC campus about once a month. They tend to be laid back (except for about a year ago when two dental students got into a fight) and reasonably well attended by most of the professional schools. Also, several former OU med students own a pretty cool bar in bricktown called Lit. The match day party was there, and all of the 4th yrs. drank for free from 6pm to 10pm. The school will also throw the occasional party down in bricktown. Overall the HSC appears to have a pretty cool student atmosphere, at least from an outsider’s perspective.

The Aberdeen is on NW 15th and Robinson. It's about 10 blocks N of where the OKC bombing occurred but more importantly, it's in a high dollar neighborhood of 100 year old mansions that are amazing! Some of the perimeter neighborhoods are a little if-fy but I've never heard of anyone having any problems there. I know lots of people who live all around that area and really love it.

The two bedroom townhouses are about $700/month split between the two people so ~$350 each. The studio apartments are ~? $450 if I remember correctly...I'm way further down on that list and I doubt there is much chance of getting the studio, but i'll let you know if i get the 2bedroom....i'm 8th on the list but I hear there is not much movement.

wait there is not much movement for the university village? damn i called two weeks ago and the lady said that if i had filled out the application then (being my irresponsible self, i havent yet) that you would get a 2 bedroom townhouse. is it even worth trying to get on campus housing now?

thanks.

sigh... man I wonder if there'll be any on campus housing left for the late waitlist acceptance people. but yea, a townhouse for $700 a month???? wow... 👍 I used to pay that much for a small double apartment at penn. yea.. i'll definitely need some housing advices from you guys if i do get in...

hmmm. I sent my application in the first week of february and applied for both types of apartments. I called last week to find out where I was on the waitlists and was told then not to expect alot of movement, not sure if she meant for the studio or the townhouse, but she may have been talking about the studio since that was my prefered choice.

Mods are pretty much alphabetically arranged. You won't find out your mod or modmates until orientation.

There's no way in hell a first year med student would get a studio. Those are like gold and are moved into by current residents who have first pick.
I lived in the two bdrm. They are nice and well kept, but TINY townhouses. Go look first, and see if it will work for you before you commit. I have a brand new two bdrm in Edmond for less rent that is twice as big with drive up parking. Yes its a 20 minute commute, but the fact that I homeschool makes it not such a big deal. First semester requires much more attendance however, with anatomy lab and all, and I have to admit it was nice to be that close.

Do they segregate the single and married people or is that one just another rumor too?

It's a rumor, but there will be a good mixture of both.

Just wondering if anybody knew when OU started sending out info on enrollment, immunizations, etc. Thanks

Haven't seen it, but I did watch the new show "Gray's Anatomy" this week. I thought that it was alright. Kinda like scrubs only a little more serious.

I forgot about Gray's Anatomy (the title of the show makes me groan).

I do watch Scrubs, though, and last night's new episode was my all-time favorite.

I luv scrubs! What time/day does it come on...? been awhile since i've been able to watch it...seems like it used to be on thursdays.

I really liked the premiere Gray's. I laughed my ass off when they had the model doing all the rectal exams. :barf:

I need to d/L the Scrubs eps and get caught up after I clean all these 24 eps off my hard drive.

I had to delete 3.5 seasons of The West Wing off my computer last week. 🙁

It was a sad day. I really want a DVD burner!

i loved the part where the derm was rushing to his patient on scrubs i was tearing up 😀, i was watching it with a freind who wants to be a derm.
Grey's anatomy is good, but i doubt it will last.

hmm...how do you guys DL scrubs? bitt torrent? please PM me, i have a lan line but can't fine a good DL prog for movies/shows.

still waiting to hear from OU...blahhhhhhhh accept me already!!! hehe
ps. i heard scrubs' music is very similar to the movie Garden State!

ciao
ou waitlister 2009

my current contingency plan aka plan B:
Georgetown SMP
Columbia Master in Biotechnology
Hopkins's MA Biotech/MBA
Upitt Master in Bioethics
Dental School

Does OU Med have a 1 year master of science programs??? with a bunch of upper level molecular biology courses?

on a diff note, i took 5R the other day, and i made a 8PS 9 B and 10 Verbal. 2 weeks to go and im not sure if i want to take it till august, any input fellas? Alot and i mean alot of my classmates are taking it for "experience" and are doing pretty bad on the their practice tests like low 20s. I know i'll hit a 30 come august, but i havent really had time this semster, its like half ass studying so far. Ive made double digits on each section before, but never all 3 on a test. And my damn verbal is always ranging from 8-12, so i dont know what score will show up on that =/.

hey abe, i had similar stats when I was taking practice MCATs... I choose to take it in august...however eventhough I was finally plateauing around 30-32 on practice tests (i must have taken like 20 total exams - was doing 2 a week for 2 months in the summer) prior the real MCAT, I only got a 28 on the August MCAT...sigh.. it was a bummer. But yea, what I want to say is, there is the luck factor involve too. I mean on the test day, if you got the mcat version that has the materials you are good at, you are bound to do better than your avg (they have like 11 diffs versions on test day) .... on the otherhand, if you got the version with materials you are weak in (like me)...you might get below what you usually get on the practice exams. Sighhhhhh

PS don't forget the curve factor...most people tend to do well in august since they have all summer to prepare, the curve will not be as generous as the april one.

You should look in the graduate programs at ouhsc.edu

Hey everybody,

This thread kinda died, so I'm just giving it a little bump. I've got HUGE neuro exam (some say it's the worst one of the first year) tomorrow. Wish me luck and enjoy your freedom.

Btw, I went and watched Sin City the other night....good stuff 👍 👍

hey adsharp, gluck on the test!

I think the thread will pick up again when the waitlist movement start in may or even the end of this month?

Are there any accepted applicants who read this thread, and know that they are going to withdraw? As a current waitlister I was curious.

I'm waitlisted at a couple of other schools that I would think about going over OU.

good luck everyone.

If my top choice gives me a substantial financial aid package, I will withdraw. However, I don't see that happening.

for those on the waitlist, what are you guys' contingency plan? are you guys going to apply again this june? or wait a year, get a master/postbac/retake mcat and apply next june?

in a limbo....

grey's anatomy seems like a chick-flick to me, don't u guys think so?

any out of state OU acceptees plan to withdraw??? =)

OU is my #1 choice, where I am currently on the waitlist. I have already been accepted to several other osteopathic schools, and waitlisted at OSU. If I don’t get accepted to OU, then I will attend one of the other schools where I have been accepted. I really like OU, but I have been working for a couple of years and don’t feel like putting off starting school for another year. In addition, the funding for my research project here at OUHSC is running out. That means I will be out of a job come June or July - perfect timing.

Do we have to do any applications other than FAFSA or is it just time to shut up and wait?

I called the Financial Aid office today to ask some questions. The lady that I talked to said that all you really need to do, as far as financial aid goes, is fill out the FAFSA and wait for your award letter to arrive. It usually takes a few weeks for them to send them out after you submit your FAFSA.

And the online scholarship app on the website. I do not think it is required though.

Ifesiam, I have other acceptances. I'll have to pack up my family and move, but I'm ready to get this doctor thing started! My daughter is freaked about moving. I keep telling myself 'whatever happens is for the best.' I noticed on another forum that an out-of-stater plans on withdrawing from OU. He's waiting to see the finacial aid package. Maybe that will open a space for you.

As far as Grey's Anatomy. I think it is a chick-flich too!

Grey's Anatomy is stupid. Any surgical intern who shows up in the morning when it's daylight is already about 3 hours late!

Just another medical show that is all Hollywood and no reality!

Hey frogmed, goodluck with moving (if you have to, cuz you never know, OU might be sending out some letters soon) Yea i hate moving, in college, I went for a more powerful desktop vs a laptop.... now i'm regreting it because I had to haul around the desktop with me everytime I moved!

as for me, i have no other acceptances, only waitlist....i think it's because I applied really late.. like a week before datelines =( (i took the august mcat) my plan so far is to improve my sci gpa via a master or a special sciences postbac program (my mcat is at OU's avg, but if I have to take it again, i will) and formally get my full black belt in tae kwon do. (i'm testing for my black stripe this friday!!!!)

ps..it's so hard trying to find a doctor to shadow in philly, I emailed like 20, only 4 responded saying they are too busy...... Man... where's the love? Do you guys know which type/field of doctor is more willing to let you shadow??

Today a CNN show mentioned an Oklahoma Senator and physician, Dr. Coburn (OBGYN). US senators are not supposed to recieve and income from a job or company once they take oath, yet he does still see some patients. He was quoted as saying his responsibilty to his patients take priority over those as a senator. I think they also said he asked for permission to see those patients that are currently under his care. I found it interesting and just thought I would share it.
