if you want a super deal, shop newegg.com. they have some one-day specials that are ridiculous. also, if you want to build your computer, you can buy all of the components there for dirt cheap.

I love Newegg. 🙂

I've built my last two computers and got my components from them (except for the processors).

The minimum mcat score to get an interview this year was 25. Even if you have a good gpa ( I had 3.7) and your mcat score (they take they most recent) is below 25 you don't get an interview. My advice: if you meet the minimum mcat, apply as early as you can!

I kepting thinking how great they would be to mountain bike across. But I didn't really see a lot of trails. Is there a large mountain biking community, or any at all? I decided to apply because my Dad's family is from OK. And I thought I would have a better chance getting in to OU than any of the UC schools.

What are the recommended specs OU gives for the computer? I have a laptop thats 2 years old, and dont really want to go buy another laptop/computer.

Also, what programs or applications will we actually need on the computer. I'm not too tech-savvy, and I know I won't be one of those students that takes their laptop to class. Basically, I'd like to know what you need to watch the lectures from your computer?

Thanks.

If your computer is two years old, you're fine. My 7 year old computer would have been fine, but I wanted a laptop.

I don't know what the videos online run on, but I've never had any problems and I didn't have to download anything special. I have a Dell Inspiron 8200.

The 3K or so a semester is the more standard amount, I think.

Ad Sharp,

Did you actually receive the 3K for each semester this year? I only got it once (spring semester). It was called "SDS Medicine" on the award letter.

Thanks

gourman, are you matriculating as a first year student this year? did you already get your fin. aid letter?

Sounds like he/she is MSI or greater...

On an unrelated note, my new job has really solidified my decision to go to medical school. I've been working the last four weekends as an admitting/registration coordinator at a local ER. I absolutely love the healthcare culture, but it will be so nice when I get to do more than just register patients. Last night I got to watch a conscious sedation on a 10 year-old that had broken his arm. While he was out, the doc reduced his fractured radius and ulna. That was cool to see, although the sound of the bones cracking did make me cringe a bit. If I had better manual dexterity and a majority of the cases weren't low-income people coming for inane reasons, I'd seriously consider emergency medicine.

I'm currently an MS1. I got one of the scholarships that they give out w\ admissions, so possibly that's why I only received the $3g once. We got an e-mail stating this: "Effective Monday, April 18, 2005, the Office of Student Financial Aid will begin sending out award letters for 2005-2006." So hopefully you guys will start getting your award letters pretty soon.

As a bitter aside, a number of my friends are going to law school in Oklahoma, & they're getting outrageous (like full tuition or close to) scholarships (w\ pretty mediocre stats, I might add). I wish the medical schools would step it up a little w\ the funding!

Classes begin third week in august, but orientation is the week before.
Looking on the calendar for this year, that is Mon. August 8th.
I'd call the COM to make sure though, because you can't miss orientation.

Whew!!! thanks, I was about to madly start changing my summer plans
at the last minute! 🙂

Anyone know what all is orientation going to encompass? Anything major that we haven't already seen during interview day?

I finally decided to attend OU next year, so I thought that I would say "hello" and that I look forward to meeting all of you. My husband and I live in Montreal and won't be able to get down there until the first of August. I am from Norman so I am excited about coming back home. I have never lived in OKC, so I have no idea in which part of the city to live in. We are thinking about renting a house. Any good ideas?

ok about 75 ppl took mcat at OSU saturday, and so far only 9 have gotten into OU 9 from our senior class that seems so low lol 9/75 seems so damn low. Everbody says there no preference given to OU undergrad students but i think its a lie 😀. Ive heard one physician said they do? Is this all a rumor or what.

I go to Miami. I think that we are hated probably as much, if not more than OSU, but they still decided to let a Hurricane join the ranks. I felt like I had to play 20 questions at my interview about why I would want to go to OU if they let me in. ummm, because of OKC's lovely babes, beaches, and weather????

I think any school that has a medical school will show a slight preference for their undergrads. I know at my school, Emory, there are about 25 Emory undergrads (out of a class of 110) in the med school. I think its natural to give some preference, especially since the adcom would be familiar with the professors. I'd bet that the OSU med gives some preference to OSU grads too. I've heard that typically there are about 30 OU grads and 20-25 OSU grads in a typical class at OU, but I could be completely wrong (please correct me if I am off a little).
Anyways, I don't think going to a particular school will hinder your chances just because they are rivals in sports. Nevertheless, I'd be up for not accepting a UT-Austin graduate just cause I hate the longhorns so much 😉 .

Does anyone who received the merit scholarship with the acceptance letter, know if you have to maintain a certain gpa your final year? I'm not doing too well this semester (~3.0) and fear that they could revoke the scholarship
Thanks.

About 1/4 of our class is from OSU, and about 1/4 of our class is from OU, so there is no preference from one school over the other.

Damn, I was just a tad bit off 😉. I guess 9 students from OSU isn't unusual then.

I'd like to see OSU's actual numbers, but lets assume for a second OSUdoc's post is correct about 1/4 of each state school represented.

Since their class size is in the mid-80's, as opposed to OU at 150, we'll say there are 22 OSU and 22 OU students.

That means there are about 85 OU and 33 OSU matriculants between the two schools. Do the math and this shows that, between 2/3 and 3/4 of the matriculants from each institution attended their respective med school.

The apparent difference in numbers is due to OSUCOM's much smaller class size compounded by the relatively low number of med school matriculants from OSU-Stoolwater as compared to OU, than to a preference by the medical college in each case.

I hate biostats/epidemiology, but here's a good use for it.

OSU-COM:

20 from OSU
22 from OU

11 OSU 66 OU damn!
I didnt know OU was so prefererntial, because i know there are plenty of 3.7+here at OSU applying to OU, i figured alot more would get in, i know gpa isnt everything but if say 50 apply and get interviews and 11 get in then theres not a 50% chance like i thought it was.
I dont think im making sense but i just got done with physio test 😀.

Abe,
It's not preferential on the schools part. I tried to explain why above, but let me try again to make more sense.

There are 31 medical students in the state from OSU
There are 88 medical students in the state from OU.
OU has a class size of 150, while OSU is like 88 (i think)

11 OSU students (35%) attend OUCOM, 20 OSU students (65%)attend OSUCOM

22 OU students (25%) attend OSUCOM, 66 OU students (75%) attend OUCOM.

Thus, between 65-75% of OSU and OU undergrads attend their respective medical schools. The knee-jerk difference is due to the size of the matriculant pool compounded by the differences in class size between OSU and OU, not by preference on the schools part.

I won't start a flame war by going any further, but lets just say it's a safe argument that OSU and OU (undergrad and medicine) are quite different schools, and attract quite different people. I think this is a reasonable variable to insert in the discrepancy.

did you guys ever read OU's student's and faculty's policy handbook? there're some interesting/trivial info in there.

i.e., for example, adcom's makeup & "list of deans" tree diagram:http://www.medicine.ouhsc.edu/policy/index.pdf

Also the differences in the amount of OU undergrad and OSU undergrads that are admitted to OU SOM may be due to the fact that A LOT more OU undergrads apply to OU SOM than OSU undergrads. I know that a lot of OU undergrads applied this year. I would say that probably at least twice as many people from OU undergrad apply to OU than from OSU.

a random question:

what clubs/ activities do most OU medstudents/ gradstudents participate in? intramural sports?

just wondering (i'm a soccer/tae kwon do/fine arts/gourmet cooking fanatic)

PS: i think OUmed humanities art&lit magazine: blood & thunder is awesome (I worked as a layout editor/ editor in chief for an art& lit magazine in high school & college)

Anyone received fin aid offers yet? nothing yet for me.

lfes-

im a big time soccer fan. i love playing (especially goalie) but i have to admit im not that good. never played competitively, except for IM sports at school (which means nothing). do you follow soccer? lately, i've been really into watching soccer especially uefa champions league, english premiership and bundesliga. i'm a diehard manchester united fan. hopefully, there will be a good number of soccer fans in the upcoming class so we can all just chill and watch these matches, while we smoke the hookah (ill provide a couple hookahs).

To those already MS1 and higher, how necessary/helpful/whatever is it to have a laptop for classes and studying in the mods. My wife, ever the budget conscious one, is trying to rain on my laptop parade, and I need to make a compelling case before it gets okayed. 😛

So... the more necessary the better. 😉

pbeh
haha, i used to be into serie A & english premiership, liverpool for me hehehe, haven't had time to watch it lately, (cable is expensive, 20 more bucks/month to get the international sport channels)

but yea i'll take u up on the offer...if Dr. Hall decided to take me off the waitlist =)

arrgghh the agony of waitin'!!!

It's not MANDATORY to have a laptop, but it is at times very convenient. At the very least, you must have a good desktop at home w/ a high speed internet connection, but it is nice, especially in 1st semester, to be able to sit at your mod desk, and watch dissection videos on your laptop while reading Netters or syllabus. I got rid of my desktop, and now use my laptop exclusively. I don't attend class anymore, but I sit in my recliner at home and use my laptop alot reviewing lectures, practice questions, etc.

Are there any computer labs on campus?

What about wireless internet access?

I can't remember what they told us during the tour. 😳

There are two computers in each mod, a 24hr computer lab in the student union, and wireless access in the student union. There are also several computers in the library on the 3rd floor.

All have high speed network access.

if OU can install wireless internet on campus...that would be really sweet. all you need is a bunch of wi-fi hotspots to cover the whole area.

you smoke a hookah too 😀 i just bought a new sweet one from the middle east, i quit watching soccer for the damn mcat, but ill follow once its over.

Due to the fact that patient information is available on the OUHSC network, they wig hard about security. They make you change your password about twice a year, it has to have like 5 thousand characters, special characters, numbers AND letters. In addition, you will find out in orientation just how serious they are about keeping access to the network secure.

Also, if anyone is planning on living in the Univ. Village apts. on campus, forget getting a wireless router. They will track you down and make you get rid of it. I bought one right before I moved in, only to find out that it's considered a security risk because they can't ensure that the access point is secured. I even tried to convince them to let a computer tech look at it to make sure it was an encrypted signal, but no go.

I don't know about this year, but last year, they didn't tell us before we moved in, so hopefully this will save some people on here some $$$.

I don't know why the entire campus isn't wireless though, because obviously all they would have to do would be to expand the wi-fi network currently in place. However, given the pace of development at the OUHSC, I would suspect that it's not long until that is the case.

OSU has wi-fi all over campus. Perhaps OU should come up to speed.

LAN line at every desk in the classroom, as well.

Hey hey, no need to hate. OU will get it in due time, just be patient. Anyways, no one is trying to compare the two schools, we all know OU kicks OSU's ass in the things that matter the most 😉 .
