Does anybody know what time the power failed in the BSEB? I had heard that Knehans lecture today was not taped due to the power failure, but the first hour is on-line (much better than nothing). I was thinking I had heard the power failed around 9:30, which means we just have 30 minutes missing. By the way, whoever heard of a tape recorder with a volatile memory??

I think 9:30 is about right - it made for a very strange last half-hour of lecture. Flickering lights, ungodly noises coming from the sound system, projector shutting off at about 9:45... weird

I'm really glad that one biochem teacher won't let us email our one-pg research summary on NF1. I'd much prefer to spend 1.5 hrs driving to campus, walking to the union to print it out, then walking to BMSB and going up 8 floors to drop it off to his secretary, then walking back to my car and driving home using $4 in gas...**** I should've fedx'd it.

It's a stupid make-up paper for craps sake.

I guess he's not going in for all these email trends those young wippersnappers are falling for.

I know of someone that drives from stillwater almost every day. Some people can do it. You can always listen to lectures in the car. I would do everything to avoid it, but if it is a must (as it is in his case), it can be done.

I was originally, but after I wrote it, I was like "Hey that ten minutes saved me an hour of talking to a patient, another hour presenting to the class, and who knows how long the module would have deliberated over the presentation and who had to stand up in front of the class." Plus I would have had to wake up at an early hour on Friday (which I hate hate hate). Dropped mine off on Monday.

BTW Johnny, the department secretary in question is on my myspace. Nice lady but married. 🙁

Oh, not this block, my good friend. I am so far behind - normally I would be climbing the walls at this point - but I just can't seem to work up a panic...

Being treasurer was fun until I got a 3" stack of checks for T-shirts... not enough money to go to Mexico, but certainly more than I was expecting.

I wanna be a flirt, too (although I'd vote for Wiz). Although, as I mentioned to someone in class, I can't even look around the room without looking like a dirty old man... everyone is 20+ years younger <sigh>. I wanted to hear Hanas this morning but I slept late so I went in with a ballcap (and really scary looking hair that hadn't been washed under it). Nobody seemed to recognize me.

So I heard that the written part is already done, so hopefully it was strongly influenced by Chung. I've got to admit, I feel like a horrible person for worrying about how losing Chung will hurt my grade. Yeah, I suck, but I sort of think I'm not alone.

IMO, Chung keeps anatomy sane. Yeah, O'Don's not the antichrist or anything and I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he makes it sort of insane sometimes.

Don't worry about the test (well, about who wrote it anyway). I know you guys want to feel special, like each exam is handcrafted just for the class of 2010, but it's really not 🙂 They have a bank of test questions (all of which have been approved by Chung, possibly before you were born), and they just pull from it to form an exam (we need two questions on this lecture, three from this, etc. etc.). The few new ones they may be trying out were probably written by Chung last semester or last summer.

Also, I caution you against thinking the head and neck is an "easy" block. I'm pretty sure it was roughly as hard as TB2.

Even at the gym or biking/running, I'm too engaged in my environment to focus on words that don't have a whole lot of meaning; for me, a lot of them don't without the context of a syllabus. But I'm a more visual person. I just used the whole lecture in the truck thing as an excuse to get a ipod dock. Shhhhhh.....

Biochem's a different story -- I really can't blow off this final. I also realized that every single question I missed on the mini was from DeAngelis since I blew off his stuff and focused so much on Steinberg. Go figure.

Yeah, in our class. I know another person that makes a 2 hour drive a few times a week. She homeschools a lot though. The guy I was talking about makes it to class almost every day. Family obligations, something I don't have... ah the wonders of being a traditional student.

I couldn't stand doing it, but where there's a will there's a way.

Used Kaplan's for IHI last block - it was great. Haven't used it much other than that, but that's partly because I haven't started on IHI this block 😳

Yep, as opposed to biochem where everything is a certain percentage. Here's the point breakdown.

3 test blocks -- 145 x 3
2 minis -- 2 x 30
ARS -- 60 (but we got 66 questions, so you can get up to 6 bonus. 🙂 )
lab participation -- 30 (supposedly everybody gets this if you don't screw up majorly)
PBL -- 15

You should buy a civic. It's the best car ever -- well, if you're like me and can't afford a prius.

Everything we've said about how much we're suffering is greatly exaggerated (hehehe... enjoy your Spring and Summer!!).

Anybody want a slightly-used German Shepherd? I decided to take a study break and clean up the mud all over the house from the snowstorm. I wait until the pawprints are dry - then they vacuum up. Anyhoo... I let the dog in from outside - thought her feet were dry (she knows the "one paw at a time" routine when I grab a towel) - and she followed the vacuum cleaner all over the house, barking all the way (that's normal). But, because I wasn't looking behind myself, I now have fresh paw prints all over the entire house from where she followed me while I was vacuuming up the old ones.

Perhaps someone is trying to tell me to get back to the books...

This and I got offerred a free trip for a medical mission to Nicaragua. Its a good month

I have a review book of some sort for every subject in addition to First Aid, so I think I'm more in danger of drowning in material than wanting more.

We have a similar situation in our class. We have two students that get paid for notegroups, and one of them is outstanding while the other one writes notegroups that essentially consist of "read the syllabus and look at the slides". Despite the fact that they charge the same price, the outstanding writer gets fewer clients 🙁 I do really like the other person, so I understand people wanting to help him out, but it is still frustrating that such a large percentage of our notegroups are less than stellar (2009 is VERY lazy when it comes to notegroups-- the vast majority of people pay someone to do them).

I think the system works a lot better when everyone just writes their own notegroups. I put a lot of care into mine, and why wouldn't I when I only have to write 2 a semester? On the other hand, if I were writing 10 a week, there's no way I could spend as much time on them. I think that's why previous classes have had more success with notegroups-- you couldn't sell a notegroup for less than $40 in the class of 2008, so most people were willing to just suck it up and write their own. But our class got into a bidding war, and at $15, anyone's willing to pawn them off 🙁

I wish we could a free trial of Qbank or something before dropping $400 bucks on it. Oh well, I guess the 7 figure signing bonus and 6 figure salary you get once your (Ortho/Neuro/Derm/CT surg/etc.) residency is over is worth the $400 spent making sure you ace step 1.

I got Bs in both of my premed req'd classes my last semester of college (3000 lvl English class and a non-western civ). I think I remember asking the same question last year... just enjoy yourself your last semester. I'm pretty sure maintaining academic standards is code speak for "Don't fail your classes."

If they aren't pre-reqs they won't care/know. Unless you tell them. We were just talking about this in the mod, what our letters did to our next semester. I went and dropped all my spring classes and signed up for OSU's 3+1 physiology degree, where my MS1 becomes my UG4. But I had all my prereqs done.

And about work, for those talking about it: if you haven't already, DON'T tell ANYONE your plans. I ****ed myself because I couldn't use paternity leave under the FMLA because they knew I wasn't "intending to return" at its exhaustion. I had to come down with chronic Anal Glaucoma multiple times before all my sick leave was used, burn vacation, and I owe several people scripts for Viagra so that I would have insurance for my son's birth. I didn't know I would need it until after I got in. Which brings me to point B: If you haven't already, DON'T celebrate by knocking your old lady up! Your first test block is 41 weeks away. Do the math. Unless you're superman or content with sucking hind tit. I'm neither, but I do what I can. We all do, really. I'd prolly still be doing ****ty in biochem if my syllabus wasn't covered in spit-up.

My thought is that if everyone does her own notes, it evens things out. Some people do cr@ppy notes, some people do great notes, and most notes pick up the important stuff. With only one note writer, you're totally dependent on how reliable that one person is. Also, you're right -- you can do a good job if you only do it a few times a year. If you're writing 20 note sets a week, you either have to be super human or you'll screw up some. Unfortunately, our one note writer is our class clown. Hopefully some people will take him on next semester.

Congrats to SoonerGeek! To Benoit and others, I would not worry about making Bs in your remaining prereqs.

On my happy note, I recalculated my biochem grade and can do about 8% lower than I thought on the last test and still keep my grade. Yay! Less studying for me now. Is this third test block burnout normal?

I was! I had a couple of maternity shirts that were bleached out from some random chemicals b/c my big belly would rub against the lab bench. Man, I'm such a good mom, I was also working during the day in nuclear medicine = radiation. I did my homework though and wasn't worried. I get really annoyed at people who act like pregnant women have to sit on a couch all day leaning to their left side, with their feet propped up or they will miscarry. Okay, that was a weird tangent.

I really wouldn't worry at all about your grades. I agree with wantobeadoc, just don't fail. It's not like Dr. Hall is going to sit down and personally review all 160ish people's grades for this and the spring semester. Your interview is over, your grades have already been reviewed. It's not like anyone going to pull all your information and say "We've noticed that your GPA dropped to a 3.0 last semester, would you like explain that?"
