Oh, the airplanes... The airplanes... 🙁

Not near as much damage as there should have been, watching the tornado go perfectly over the top of those hangers.

I can't count how many times I've landed at that airport, and it killed me to see a tornado rip through it.

I can't imagine being the people who owned the planes though seeing them scattered for the first time from the News 4 helicopters vantage.

ouch...

LOL it took me a few seconds to comprehend that those weren't toy airplanes and that somebody was probably going to be pretty unhappy... wouldn't they probably have insurance for that kind of thing though? I know if I were to invest in something that expensive, I'd have it insured out the wazoo...

Yeah, they're all insured unless they're really, really old and decrepit. But then those wouldn't likely be in a hangar, and the news said all 10 planes in one hanger were damaged.

Still, it sucks because you've got to get somebody to come to El Reno to come do structural work on your plane, cuz you obviously can't fly it to them, so they may be waiting awhile.

Is it wrong of me to be disappointed David Payne wasn't sucked up into the sky? I'm actually surprised Mike Morgan stopped givin' him a reacharound long enough for him to go chase dust devils. But then I might be jaded; last time he opened Mike's genetic deposit hole about a "tornado" in Stillwater I had to pick an old lady up with a broken hip who tried to get in her shelter. All over some virga scud shadow that only he saw. Pffft. Or maybe I'm just angry.

Gary England on his off days > Mike, his million watts of horse****, and his balding jizz monkey

Does anyone who didn't have to endure ego-stroking weathermen know how much Thorpe the Pirate won on Deal or No Deal? Tulsa market; anyone? I thought my captain was going to come un-freaking-glued when they cut in on that! Would picture-in-picture kill 'em?

Don't try this at home kids: Gary England Springtime Drinking Game

The only highpoint of the whole thing was when Gary said something about a tornado way down south, and then said "Eh, nevermind. Its headed into Texas." We were rollin'...

That was hilarious, I was watching good ol' Gary last night. From those rules, I would have been dead drunk 4 or 5 times over.

Take one drink every time Gary says the following:
"Hook echo" | "Updraft" | "Metro" | "Doppler radar" | "Wall cloud" | "Ranger 9" | "Underground" | "Mobile home"

That one rule alone would have trashed me.

Speaking of which, I think that tornado mistook the airplane hangar for some trailer houses... or as Jeff Foxworthy calls them "tornado magnets."

Good grief, I haven't lived in the Oklahoma City television market since I left Stillwater over 20 years ago. And I remember exactly what you guys are talking about with Gary England and the OKC weathermen. LOL... going back to school full-time is going to be such an incredible time-warp... nice to know some things haven't changed. Our weatherman in Tulsa just asks the anchorwoman to marry him - on the air. A couple of years later they brought-in their new baby with them to do the morning news show on Christmas Day because they couldn't get anyone to baby-sit. It was really very heartwarming.

For the storm last night I had to go stand in the front yard when the sirens went off. Funny thing is, going out front seems to be an instinct. I know my father did it from the time I was old enough to remember - I bet his father did it before him when they lived in Oklahoma - and I do it. I have no clue why, I just do it. Some guy thing. Like standing in the front yard is going to protect the property or something.

That's what front yards are for.

"Come and get me, Mr. Tornado. I have gas more dangerous than you." 😀

I saw a repeat of it on CNBC. He made a deal for $464K (the largest amount ever won on the show), and his suitcase contained $400K.

Good for him. The pirate gig was getting old, but he was still kickin' ass.

Like how Gary always says "If you're new to this area..." Dude, the only people that give a popcorn fart about anything you're saying are people who were from another state when Twister came out. Or people from Moore and Mulhall. I don't know what ya'll did, but somebody there ain't livin' right.

Non-trad, I think going out front is the male way of verifying, "Yep. Looks ****ty. They might be right." Grunt, spit a little, then go crawl in the bathtub...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but on the off chance that people from the soon to be MS2 class see this board and not the chat/curriculum boards, Dr. Blair wants us in white coats for tomorrow's physiology lecture since they'll have a diabetes patient there.

What's really sad is that the hangars were brand new.

Okay, I actually remember Gary England. Weather people are totally not important in Oregon because we don't have extreme weather. People actually get excited when we get lightning, which happens maybe maybe once a year. I miss thunderstorms -- I'm worried about hail, though, especially since I have a new car. My kitty doesn't miss thunderstorms, though -- she always had to hide underneath the bed when it stormed in Texas. 🙂

I was even more pissed that FOX showed the weather coverage instead of the last half of Prison Break and the beginning of 24. I mean, when the hell did FOX start caring about the weather?

I wonder if there are weatherman groupies.

"Hey Bob, you looked soooooo sexy talking about that storm...MMmmm...DO ME LIKE AN OKLAHOMA TORNADO!!!!!!"

So do we!

All this time the Gazette has been online? That's the only reason I like taking ambulance transfers to the city, so I can pick up a copy when we stop to eat!

Do you still work at Stillwater?
I was a paramedic in Muskogee before I started this and I used to HATE the VA transfers to OKC in the middle of the night (usually psych, which made it that much more irritating, since they could just as easily sit in the ER in Muskogee until morning instead of making tired medics drive 5 hours at night).
Other than that it was a great job.

Preachin' to the choir 😀 Nobody ever calls at O'dark Thirty just to say hi. Usually it's "This is so and so from SMC; we have a patient that needs to go to so and so hospital for procedure X, which will be performed later tomorrow." I don't know how many nights I've made it from T-town or OKC bouncing from side to side on those little wake-up strips. 😱 I haven't been to VAMC too many times though. In that capacity anyway.

I'm still at SFD, at least until I find a house down there. I've got mi casa de Still-agua sold, so the housing hunt has taken on a new urgency...I don't know when I'll leave. I'm just trying to save up some Oh **** cash and a few months worth of BCBS premiums so I don't have to deliver my own son. Speaking of which, if anyone can recommend a XX OB in the city, I'd be eternally grateful. Momma isn't happy with her current one. Something about disproportionate hand size. I told her to suck it up, it beats a DRE anyday. She didn't think that was funny.

Be careful now... David's little brother is an MS-2

I asked my wife. She recommends:
Dr. Melanie Gibbs who used to be at Central Oklahoma Medical Group (in 1999 when we had our first son. Not sure if she's still there or not)
Dr. David Melendez is her current Gyn at Mercy.

The best ob/gyn in the city is Dr. Sharla Helton. She was at lakeside womens center over by lake Hefner. She is the best, hands down! Send your wife to her if you can. She is awesome!!!!!

My OB preceptor was Dr. Lauranne Harris, and she's fantastic. She's up at Deaconess, but delivers at most of the area hospitals (regardless of which OB you go with, I'd recommend delivering at Lakeside-- they're superb).

Her contact info is Dr. Lauranne Harris, (405) 949-6420, 5701 N Portland Ave.

Thank you guys for the leads, I'll pass 'em on.

Just wait till you see knees and elbows sticking out. 😱 It's really weird. Especially when you push them down and he pokes them right back out. Kinda like you are communicating with each other. Ahh, the joys of pregnancy. 🙂 It was fun but I'm glad I'm past that point in my life. It only gets better.

Unfortunately, I can taste it a little too well... so well that I've been spending way too much time planning my summer and not nearly enough time studying so I can get there!! 😱

Wasn't there some talk of having a dog in medical school earlier in this thread? Well, if anyone is looking for a four-legged furry friend I picked up a stray in Bricktown Saturday night. He is very sweet. Still a puppy, But is going to be a bigger dog. I would say he weighs around 30-35lbs now. Basically if you or anyone you know is willing to take this dog off of my hands let me know. I really don't want to take him to the shelter. He is a great dog, already knows how to sit and I think he is housetrained.

I wish I could take him! I've got my hands full with my one fur-kid right now... I can already tell that looking for a rental house in OKC is going to be fun. Some people just have an innate fear of any tan-and-black dog. German Shepherds are one-person dogs and, by breeding, rather standoff-ish with strangers - but certainly not vicious. I'm learning that some landlords lump Shepherds in with "dangerous dogs." Mine is highly protective, but certainly not mean for "sport." Sigh...

I can relate! I have a boxer who is the sweetest thing to people but turns into a big bully around other dogs. So I really can't keep this dog, unless he wants to live in my garage forever. The Oklahoma City animal shelter is supposed to call me if anyone calls them looking for a dog that matches his description...maybe his owner will turn up.

Did anybody else get their financial aid information today? I'm sort of worried because my sheet lists full loan opportunities but doesn't mention my scholarship. I'll guess I have to call tomorrow to sort that out. I'm still on the fence about which lender to pick, too.

Sorry if this has already been posted. But I am confused about the different lenders. Are they all the same? And now for the obvious question, which one(s) is/are the best? Thanks

Most of them seem to be very similar, with occasional differences in fees or repayment options, stuff like that. I personally went with Medloans

Most lenders are basically the same, especially when you're talking about the Federal loan programs (subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans); the limits on borrowing, interest rates, etc. really level the playing field. The big difference is in the repayment bonuses and origination/guarantee fees they charge or offer. I think the concept of fee vs. no fee loans has already been covered pretty well, but just to be sure... Stafford lenders come in two basic categories up front, those that charge an origination/guarantee fee and those that don't. For those that do, they will charge you 2% (that's the trend I'm seeing for this year - last year it was 3%) up front to just lend you the money, which means that if you want to borrow $20000 for next year, you'll only see $19600, but you'll still be responsible for paying back the whole $20000. (Personal side note: I and most people I've talked to go for loans with no-fees, but read on before you decide.)

The next big thing is looking at the repayment bonuses out there. These will vary by lender and by which option you chose above. Medloans, for instance, has two options based on fees or no-fees. For the no-fees loan they offer 3.3% credit/cash back of the original borrowed amount once you've made 33 on-time payments as well as a .25% interest rate reduction if you sign up for ACH payments from your bank account. On the other hand, the fees option will give you 3.5% of the original loan amount back at graduation as well as 4.5% back after 33 on-time payments. One of the other popular options out there is the THE loan program through Northstar. They offer a kind of confusing credit system, which I'll let you read about if you're interested. I almost went with THE before settling on the no-fees Medloan through AAMC last year. Northstar has a nice loan calculator, which lets you see how their repayment bonuses stack up against some of the other standard options out there. From my perspective this part really comes down to how much you're borrowing and how quickly you expect to pay it back. If you're expecting to pay things back quickly, the 3.3% and 4.5% cash/credit options will yield better relative savings, but if you're looking at really stretching out those payments, the THE bonus really gains ground.

Also be sure to look at when and how often the loan gets capitalized.

That's all I've got for now. 😛

It's a difficult learning curve when it comes to researching loans, particularly if you've never had to deal with them before.

Mine's not on there either, exlawgrrl. Would you please let me know what they say? No point in flooding them with telephone calls. 🙂

Amxcvbcv said:
You should get an amended award letter sometime soon. The same thing happened to me last year. 😛

That's good to hear. I was worried I was supposed to do something big to accept the scholarship and forgot to do it.

Non-trad, I just got off the phone with the financial aid people, and they said I just write the scholarship down on the form for other sources of aid. I'm sort of nervous about that, but we'll see.

For any out of state people, they also told me to decline the alternative loans if I'm wanting to do Grad Plus loans instead. I'm just supposed to write that on the form, too.

Man, I haven't even gotten my financial aid information yet. I'm starting to worry about it because May 15th is right around the corner. Also, on the lender side, does anybody know anything about OSLA? I was wondering if anybody has borrowed from them before and what their terms are?

I borrowed from OSLA for the first 3 years of med school. They are great, but the only problem is they charge loan fees (like, $300-400 per semester), which really adds up. At the time, I thought that was the norm, but then found out later there are plenty of other lenders that don't charge any fees. T.H.E. doesn't charge anything. There are some others out there too but I can't think of any of them right now.

well, i went to the mylenderlist.com/ouhsc site and started to peruse the different lending companies and each offer. it seems at this point most of the lenders no longer charge the 3% origination fee. many of the offers are more ambiguous as to the 1% insurance fee. it seems that none of the lenders captitalize interest until repayment which is good (but a lot dont explicitly state it clearly), bc i originally thought deferred interest would be compounded immediately. at some point i am just going to have to set up a spreadsheet to evaluate differing bonus plans (interest rate reductions, principal reductions, etc.) but i didnt feel like it bc my head was going to explode. i was kind of disappointed in the amount of info available from that site though, it seems like a lot each loan's details were easily found. my best guess is that in the end, they will all end up costing about the same, so i might just play spin the bottle with the various offers.

Me too! I can't stand waiting for the mail everyday. 😴
Anyone want to call dotty to see if there has been any movement? I'm just a big chicken so I'm not volunteering.
Things have to start moving soon.....

A friend of mine at school told me today he knew a girl who just got in off the waitlist. I don't know when exactly she got her letter though.

I'm not calling Dotty...I've already bugged that poor woman enough already 😛

I really admire you guys for sticking this thing out with a sense of humor (RachelD, you're still a trouper!). I'm sure the waitlist will start humming after the 15th - and probably not much before then. I'll sure be thinking about you guys with my fingers crossed (right after my biochem final tomorrow night, which is gonna be a killer).

As soon as you're in, you can help us figure out loans. I hope glp will share his spreadsheet - I've been a Certified Public Accountant for 20 years, and this stuff just makes my hair hurt. I'm about ready to get out darts and paste the list to the wall.
