Does anyone know what are the average starting salaries for new residency graduates in Oklahoma and Texas? Also what does malpractice insurance average down there?

Thanks in advance!

There are a lot of thugs wanting to take your money down there. A nice starting salary is good but if it is all you will ever make or an out right lie in the case of an Anesthesia Management company where they promise $400K but really pay you in the form of a 180K base and the rest in a nonexistent bonus. The Anesthesia Management company make working for them so miserable that if you don't get fired by them for complaining about their failure to pay you as promised or because you complain about working 16 hour days and being on call every third day with no post call day off you will probably quit before you finish your first year.

The big groups the major cities have a history of hiring new graduated for 180K working them as hard as they can then firing the just before they are up for partner in three years. Don't make that mistake if you pick the wrong job you will have to pay the big tail up to 25K.

Best choice is to find a job where you get paid for your work on a per case basis, the more you work the more you get paid, Instead of giving 40% to 50% of every dollar you make to a nonworking owner of an Anesthesia Management company or the lazy partners of a big group that will never give you partnership but leach off you for three to five years until they fire you for another new graduate.

"A well-known, unshaven, unkempt, foul-smelling, slightly-cyanotic, sixty-two-year-old
alcoholic gentleman was carried into our emergency room by three million lice, all screaming,
‘Please save our host.'"

suit, circa 1977

What the hell are you talking about? Texas has some of the best reimbursement in the nation. Starting salaries are anywhere from $160-$400K with partnership tracks 2-3 years, with the possible exception of Austin (4 years although that is second hand info).

The AMC's I know of are Sheridan at John Peter Smith in Fort Worth ($330K starting and not too much higher after 3 year partnership track) and two other hospitals under AMC contract, also in Fort Worth ($400K from day one, but no change thereafter).

Dallas has more than 30 groups of anesthesiologists, Houston has one gigantic association of anesthesiology groups and a bunch of smaller ones, and San Antonio has a large number of groups as well.

Austin has one or two dominant groups with a bunch of independents and smaller groups picking up the rest.

None of the groups I know of has a reputation for stringing along their associates then dumping them just before partnership. There is too much competition in Texas for a group to develop that reputation then expect to be able to hire quality candidates for increased need. One group in Dallas did that in the 90's and that group went from a big player in a big hospital chain in Dallas to a much smaller group of members doing less and less cases, unable to hire anyone because of their reputation.

What's going on with these 2-3 year partnership tracks?

Here in the midwest it seems 1 year is the norm with some groups requiring 2.

High demand for positions in some Texas cities, namely Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. There are one year tracks in many other smaller areas of Texas and a very small number in the aforementioned cities.
