Hi Everyone! I need help deciding between OU and UAMS. I am from Texas so I would like the opportunity to come back here for residency. Also not sure what I would like to specialize in so I would not like to restrict myself to something "competitive".

Oklahoma U
Pros
  • Closer to home
  • Larger city
  • More widely known (I think)
Cons
  • Alot of slander this year on sdn. Not sure if its just angry students??

UAMS
Pros
  • Everyone was super friendly and nice during interview
  • In house derm residency
Cons
  • Further from home

Summary: Both are same tuition so that is not a factor. I would mostly base my decision on the school with the best program

The slander is just a few people on SDN angry at not getting in because they removed the in-state bias this year. There's no issue with OU. My friend is going there and has had good things to say about it.

OU is a good school. There aren't a ton of research opportunities, but there are enough if you hunt at places like Dean McGee and OMRF. The new curriculum is interesting and should prepare you well for Step. However, you'll be the first class for it which might be sketch.

Despite that, I wouldn't hesitate to go to OU, particularly if it was because of some online curmudgeons. I believe their match list showed a lot of Texas residency placements as well.

I think derm might be a little hard at OU, though. It's a lot of IM/FM placements. I think you'd need to hustle a bit.
