how can you get access to forums from last year?

The old threads are still accessible. My guess is that your options have an age cut off. Go into your User CP under Edit Options

Go down to Default Thread Age Cut Off and select Show all threads.

Then scroll down and save your changes. You should now be able to see the old threads.
