Hi all. Long time no lurk or talk. Need a favor. My mentee is trying to get into medical school. Her personal statement takes a bit of a risk, but it really works if you know her. I need to see how it "plays" to someone who doesn't know her. Anyone out there care to give it a read - bonus if you have ad committee experience! I'm posting this in EM for two reasons, one, it is where everyone I know hangs out, two, she is an ED tech (I know, that's no reason but hey, it gives me an excuse to lurk a while).

Mods - please don't move this.

Thanks!

Absolutely, send it along! (not an adcom member, but former professional writer/editor)

I would look at it if you want me to. No formal experience, but personally had an odd personal statement.

i wrote a very risky personal statement for medical school and it worked out great. i would be happy to look at it if she wants a non-trad student perspective.

Never too late to repay an old favor eh? 😉 Another non-trad willing to offer perspective.

FWIW Most of this I think is common sense but I'll chime in simply because I applied to med school not too long ago but also because I applied and completed secondaries to 32 schools so I got a pretty good feel for what adcoms seemed to like and dislike.

I had a bit of an odd PS applying to med school. I feel like it's a double edged sword in that it seemed to really help me at some places and got me excluded from others.

From my experience DO schools and a few public MD schools which I had ties to their state cared about my odd PS and I think it helped me. (I got complements on it at all of my interviews, MD and DO.)

However for schools I didn't really have much of a connection (geographic or personal) I felt like having a slightly different PS hurt me as they pretty much screen by numbers. Probably would have been better not to waste nearly as much time writing solid essays for these schools.

After thought- If she can have her save some things to write about in secondaries. I know a lot of students' secondaries just repeat primaries. Like I said probably most of this is common sense but now it's on the board for that lovely search button we all like to point to.
