Youngin' 🙄

i'll be starting med school at around 24 or 25 after my PharmD. is that old? what's the average age of med students? i'm guessing 22 since majority are graduates.

I'm a non-trad. I'll be 35 by the time I go to med school, assuming I get in on the first try.

27 years old here.

I'll be at UMDNJ-NJMS (save last minute mega-scholarship from any other schools)

33 (34 soon after school starts). University of Michigan.

I didn't feel TOOO old at second look - but I dont' know what everyone else thought of me. 🙂

My plan is to ask people how old they think I am and then say "WOW! right on.. you got it perfectly." Mostly cause I look much younger than I am.

I'm 24 and I'll be starting in the Fall. I really don't think that's old at all. In fact, the average age of accepted applicants in Texas for the 2004 entering class was 23.5.

I define "old" as being more than twice my age. With this definition, I'll never be old 😀

33....34 when I start. 2 kids too....
i have a friend that is 42 w/ 4 kids and is a 2nd year.

drmaryc has a thing for younger men? Whoever would have thought.

I'm going on 27. I don't think I'm old at all. However, when I think of the fact that I'll be around 35 before I get out of residency, it's kind of shocking.

I'm 32. I don't know where I'm going this fall yet, but if more people start responding to this thread and saying which schools they're going to, that might help me decide!

My advice: if you want to fit in, just get in shape. That's the fountain of eternal youth, right there. I've got a buddy who is 27, and pretty much everyone guesses he's 22 or 23.

Seriously 29 is not old i know a 40+ man who was doing third year rotations under my mom last year. I am 25 myself and I will be first year next year if that makes you feel better.

I will be 30, if I get in 1st try for 2006. Plus I have 3 children. I'm out of shape, think the idea of getting into shape will definitely make me feel younger. Good luck Old timers.

35 at UM when school starts, but fortunately for me I'm really immature. 😛

I'm 37 & finishing up 1st year at UMd. Was the oldest person in my class when I started last fall at 36. There's about a dozen of us "older" students here, from late 20s up to me.

me i be 33 when i start with anatomy
(sorry, i hate hip hop music and i just heard a dose of it and my mind started rhyming, poorly)
i'll be either at DMU<--seat bought or SLU<--waitlist. At DMU i felt like there were plenty of elder statesmen. I didn't see very many students at SLU so I couldn't decide. 'they' say they're there. take care.

It's good to see there will be another 'early 30's' person at UM this fall!

And I use the immature line all the time as well. 😀

i'm 27, and will be starting SUNY Downstate in the fall (just decided yesterday!!). i'm a little nervous about being older, and married. i have a friend whose marriage broke up recently, amidst her first year of med school (due to her spending too much time out partying with classmates and neglecting the hubby). i've asked during visits at different med school how the interactions are between the class, pertaining to older students, and have often been told "yeah we all get along, but they (us old fogies of course) don't go out much. however they are much more motivated and definitely do the best academically." that probably sums me up, i'm not exactly looking for a social scene in med school, my priority is kicking butt and preparing for my future. but, of course it would be nice to be able to relate to and have commraderie with my classmates... i'm hoping with the diversity that Downstate is known for, that i'll be able to find people i can hang with and talk about real issues, that don't act like grade-school gossip-obsessed kids or frat boys (like i have been warned about and witnessed at some other, which will remain nameless, schools). i was considering another more prestigious, private, expensive school- but decided that the types that go there didn't appeal to me. so i feel everyone's pain, it'll be interesting going back to school. but so far in life i've always been able to find people i enjoy (and of course many that i don't), and don't think med school will be much different. and ultimately, i don't think age is what will determine if i can relate to someone or not, it'll be life experiences. i definitely have friends older than i that act much more immature than my little brother, and i am most assuredly more mature than my 55 year old father. so all of you older students, don't judge based on age- but rather the whole person. besides, haven't you ever met an old soul in young skin? good luck. are there any downstate people out there that are hearing me...?

29 - Wake Forest

Hey 2009Doc-I am 29 and most likely headed to Downstate as well. I am still waiting to hear from one other school (April interview), but have been accepted at Downstate. I too am married and have an 8 month old at home. I too was nervous about being older/married/etc...especially since at my Downstate interview the students seemed so young! Good to know I will have company if I end up there!

In my limited first year experience, people can't really tell how old you are unless you make a point of telling them. In the mid 20s-mid 30s range, it's kinda all the same. As a previous poster said - staying in shape def. keeps you young!

I started med school at 27, will be 28 soon..Unless they specifically knew that I was outta school for a while, almost everyone assumed I was in my early 20s ... that and the fact that I did make a point to hang out with the class.

The oldest person in our class is 34, and he looks more like in his mid 20s. I've found that the 25+ crowd didn't hang out with most of the class a lot, which I found to be a shame. I think one can learn a lot by hanging out with ppl of all ages - and hanging out with the younger crowd def. keeps you young as well!

I plan on partying a lot! Well, you know, the average amount. I've often found that your peer group determines your perceived age. Since I've been taking classes, everyone assumes I'm like 10 years younger than I really am.

I'll be 29 next month and hope to matriculate at 31 or 32...and be back in shape by then...

I know an Anes. Doc that is 38 and is just finishing up residency...seems our stories are about the same and he says he has NO regrets about doing it...starting about the same age I am.

Hey pumpkin and 2009doc - I'm 27 and decided to attend Downstate as well. Getting married next summer, thinking of having kids during 4th year. It's good to know there are others like me attending, with whom I can have a real conversation with. It's kind of funny, because I talked about this exact topic during my interview at Downstate. As far as fitting in, I don't really consider it that much. If I were 40+, then it can become an issue, but at that point I probably would not care. Downstate has a good mix, moreso than many of the other schools I've seen, which is one of the main reasons why I chose the school. See you in August.

30 and probably going to northwestern.

36 now, but 37 a few days after starting class. Great birthday present!

I'm 26 and will be at UNC. The only thing I'm really worried about as far as age is concerned is when to start a family. When can my husband and I find time to have kids with me starting med school later than I expected to?

i'm 27, headed to ucla, and share the same concerns! are you thinking of babies during or after med school?

Well, that's the question. I'm thinking after school, but then you have hectic residency (I'm interested in pediatric surgery). My husband's willing to stay home and take care of them, but I have to be making enough money before we can do that. Besides, I'd like to have a few months off myself. Everyone says it's possible, but lots of people also tell me there's no good time. You just do it.

I'll be 29 assuming I'm accepted somewhere...

Not sure if I count. I'm 26, going on 25. 🙂

I just don't consider myself old. Most of the people I hang out with are in college. I'm dating a girl who just turned 20 a few days ago.

I guess the main difference is that when I go out to bars, I don't drink. Waste of time/money/calories. Okay, so I love 80s hair bands, too.

I'll be hanging out with the kids straight out of college come med school. No doubts about that, really.

I am a bit curious about what happens if I don't end up marrying the current GF, though... Eh, but she's a keeper. 😉

I'll be 31 when I matriculate. My husband and I don't have kids and are planning to adopt an older child after I finish med school. I'm not sure if we'll do this when I am in residency or after. It'll depend on whether we'll have the time and money to be there for him/her.
