I've noticed several 4 year programs have a 2 year MD option at the END of training, i.e. VCU, Jackson, Banner/Good Sams, etc. For normal dual-degreed programs my understanding is that one attends 2 years of Medical School +1 year of general surgery required for licensure. How does it work for these programs? Are the 2 years just medical school or general surgery as well? How do they fulfill this requirement?

Most of the time a resident in a "4+2" has satisfied the 1yr of general surgery during their four years. Then, the two years are some rotations that satisfy the MD component.
Another way of doing the "4+2" is for every "elective" rotation during your 3rd and 4th year of medical school, a general surgery requirement is satisfied.

any rotations prior to getting the MD do not count towards your medical license, so in reality it is 4 years OMS + two years med school then 1-3 yrs of gen surg or any ACGME internship such as transitional year. Gen surg, medical rotations, anesthesia, etc.... time spent during OMS residency are considered just that to satisfy your OMS training, the individual medical boards require training post MD degree for medical license this can range from 1-3 yrs based on their requirements. If you wanna get the MD only with out license which IMO waist then 4+2.

Thanks for the responses thus far! However, the 2 replies contradict. Anyone else have any info?

recovering OMFS is also right in his thinking.
It is not as easy as a clear-cut. It is program-to-program.

You need people to sign off on your Gen Surg that are not OMS. I would imagine this could get a little dicey dependent on who you are working with in the dept of surgery.

4 + 2 + minimum of 1 (Either Gen Surg, Anesthesia, Int Med etc for your medical licensure/ Step III). Its a crummy option unless you can financially stomach the idea of deferring your existing loans another 3 years, paying an often hefty medical school tuition for 2 more years, living on resident salary one more year and losing 3 years of OMFS income.

If you really want the MD, try to bang it out in a 6 year package deal like most integrated programs.
