Hey guys,

I'm currently doing a GPR program, I've always been interested in pursuing oral surgery. I graduated in the middle of my class and didn't really have time to do too much extracurricular work because I had a tough family situation where I had to work all throughout dental school. Fortunately, I am doing much better now and I would like to try and follow my dream again. I signed up for the CBSE in Feb so I'm just spending a ton of time trying to kill that exam. I don't know if it means anything, but my undergrad GPA was a 3.85, I know a lot of residencies ask for that. In any case, my question was, I am open to doing one or even two internship years if it gets me where I want to go, but being that I wouldn't have my score for the CBSE until February, would it be looked down upon if I do private practice for a year and then come back if I cant find an internship to start at?

Any input is appreciated, thanks!

You have a strong GPA, if you get a 70+ on the CBsE you’ll be fine. In interviews they will ask you why did you choose a GPR and not an omfs internship. Have a good answer, but it won’t be as big of a deal as you may think as long as you interview well and have good numbers. Good luck.

So I think you misunderstood me, my college gpa was 3.85. Like i said, I don't know how much it matters, but hopefully it can help if anything since they ask about it. My dental school gpa was 3.45...

I was right at the middle of the class. I know its an uphill battle, but I dont mind doing a year or two of internship years if thats what I have to do. And I'm studying like a madman to try and get atleast an 80 on this exam

I did a gpr after dental school, was middle of the class in dental school. Am currently doing an internship, did decent on cbse (65+).
All this to say I applied to 26 programs this cycle and have yet to receive an interview. So definitely think about how bad you want to match and what your red flags will be. Most programs screen out class rank/gpa to an extent so you may never even get to interview at most places despite the cbse if you crush and go 80+.
Being an oral surgeon is absolutely worth it, but it takes some soul searching as I’m currently looking down the barrel of a second intern year myself.

Thanks for sharing, that helps give me perspective because I am def in a similar situation. I pretty much told my self that I should gear up for two years of internship to get in somewhere, I'd just wish there was some anecdotal evidence that you can match in our shoes. Good luck on the application cycle.

you’re going to have a much better shot if you do an intern year rather than private practice. Especially at programs known for taking their own non cats. You can still get in after doing private practice if you murder the CBSE, but most people don’t murder the CBSE.

It seems to me competition is steadily increasing every year. I personally know a few residents who got in about 3-4 years ago with low and mid 60s. Now I feel 70 is the new minimum? Is murdering the cbse about 70 or 75?

Thanks.
70 is a good beating but probably not quite a murder. Lots of people still match in the 60s but less of them talk about it on SDN.
