I plan on reapplying for omfs this year after not matching previously. I'm currently in an internship program. I retook the CBSE and scored a 74 with a top 25% class rank. Is this score enough to match with a noncat intern year under my belt? How much does an internship help your chances in general?

Work hard at your internship- be the first there in the morning, see the most patients and help out everywhere, and then be the last to leave, everyday. Get strong letters from your faculty at your new internship.

74 is competitive for sure, but I still would encourage you to cast as wide of a net as you can afford. Some programs love noncats, some programs don't want anything to do with them and you never know which programs those are going to be each year.

Your stats are not low. If you interview well your chances are good. Internships help you understand the specialty for you to be able to intelligently talk about it and how you fit in with it at your interviews.

So you don’t think the 74 is too low? I know people are getting some crazy scores nowadays

To OP, you should be fine with your stats. Make sure to work really hard during your internship and apply VERY broadly to increase your chances in matching (it sounds expensive but it’s truly an investment).

Also, internships are not a silver bullet into matching. Some internships have a better track record in matching their residents in other programs and others have records in taking their own interns. Some have neither and I would avoid those. Do your homework and ask around, feel free to PM me if you have questions.
