Hello,
Any ideas how this works? Here is the scenario: a resident in a 4-year program decideds to take leave due to illness/disability, resident pretty much resigns/quits let's say in the middle of his PGY2. Resident recovers, wants to continue residency, will he/she look for open PGY2 positions and he/she be allowed to complete residency or will he/she be required to start over, as a PGY1/ re-apply, as if from scratch?
Thanks.

Needless to say, that's very rare/unique. I believe it would depend on several other factors.

To obtain your certificate, you have to complete a specific number of months on service, as well as specific amount of time on other specific services. Those requirements would still have to be met.

The resident would likely have to find an open PGY-2 position (at the original program, or another) and do the full year, if only because of the rockiness of trying to only trying to make up only part of the year.

That said, they would not be forgiven the time if their first program had them on/off service in a way the was not aligned with the new program. The resident would potentially have to stay beyond the 48 months to be on the correct services the correct time amounts.

Needless to say, it would take some flexibility on the part of the program, and the resident.
