I have a question about moonlighting. Assuming the program allows it how do you go about setting it up. Do residents usually work in private offices or free clinics.

Also and most importantly what about your license. For instance I will have an ADEX license eventually and i'm assuming that the state that I plan to moonlight in must accept adex for licensure? Is this true even if I am in a residency training program?

Thanks

You need to hold a full dental license in whatever state you are moonlighting in so let's hope the state where your residency is located accepts ADEX. You may also need to carry your own malpractice.

How much time do OMFS residents get to moonlight anyway? I would think after averaging 2 hours of sleep a night for 2 weeks straight, most would like to spend a little time doing something not work related. I guess for 6 year programs, you'll have a lot of time those 2 years during med school. Any other time?

Anyone know the programs that allow or encourage moonlighting?

Case Western and Vandy also allow but didn't seem very prevalent at Vandy.

A lot of residents moonlight at Parkland, don't they Toof? Nursing home dentistry and stuff?

Yes, but the question referred to places where it is "allowed." Otherwise you can moonlight anywhere.

How bad would it be to get caught moonlighting when it is not permitted?...not to say

It depends on the penalty the program wants. Anywhere from a slap on the wrist to getting fired.

Not at Parkland. And it was a no-no at UAB when I externed there many moons ago, but maybe this has changed.

At UAB a current resident said they are ok with it now but i'm not 100% sure of the validity of this statement -- it might be like the setup at parkland... I'm going on an externship to UAB in the near future so I will try and ask around.

The residents told me at UNC that you would be fired if they caught you. I still think some of the residents have done it though.

There is prob no program that states in writing that moonlighting is allowed. Is there moonlighting going on? Absolutely. Just use common sense and don't let your residency commitments be compromised. It would suck to work so hard to get into OMFS, and then do something to get booted or reprimanded.

I'm sure there are program directors out there that frequent SDN's threads. I suggest we stop discussing. :meanie:
