So me and my wife are trying to plan out finances for starting a family and I am planning on doing OMFS (I am current dental student doing HPSP and prior service Army) and we have not been able to find any definitive answers on the new special pays for oral surgeons and I was hoping a current military oral surgeon could tell me what they are doing now as far as pay. I've seen some sites that say ISP "up to 75k" which is fairly ambiguous and was wondering if this is separate from multi year retention bonus and if you can get ISP during HPSP payback after residency.

Thank you very much and thank you for your service.

If you are an oral surgeon, then you will earn the max ISP (the $75k) every year you serve as an oral surgeon. You will only get the general dentist ISP or VSP/ASP while a resident or any time before residency. The MYRB is for when you finish your payback after residency. I believe it is $50k/yr, but may be higher for OMFS.

Army OMFS can get the combined $50k ISP and $50k multi-year only when your payback for HPSP and OMFS is paid off (usually at 9-10 yrs after graduating from dental school) and you take the 2 bonuses together (4 yr obligation). If you hit that point you will get the combined $100k bonus/yr for your 4 yr commitment (plus other pays - boards, VSP, DASP, etc...). All this is subject to change once the new combined pay come into effect (no I have not seen the specific number and do not know what those pay packages will be...like everyone else I hear they will be "as good if not better" than current bonuses).
