Can anyone explain the path one has to follow to apply to OMFS residency then get into plastics in 2018?

Thank you

I just want to be enabled to do a wide variety of cosmetic treatments to a patient face. lol I believe dentistry will better skill me for that than any other program.

If you want to focus on cosmetics, a GP or Prosth would be your best bet. If you want to be a plastic surgeon, you should pursue medicine.

I agree, go to med school.

To answer your question though: complete a 6 year program and then do a cosmetics fellowship afterwards.

You can do it, it’s just a very long drawn out process with the DMD route.

It would be 4 year dental, 6 year OMFS, then 3 years plastics. But you need to get into an OMFS program that gives you credit for 2 years of general surgery, or you’ll have to do another gen surg year. Process can take 9+ years after dental school, with the process being uber competitive.

Why not MD, then 5-6 years integrated plastics residency?

If you’re talking about doing facial cosmetics, OMFS has a couple of 1 year fellowships that will train you to perform facial cosmetic procedures. You don’t have to go into Plastics just so you can do facial cosmetics. It’s a tougher market to penetrate, but some OMFS guys have made it work.

Some of the top of my head are Joe Niamtu, Faisal Qureshi, Angelo Cuzalina, John Griffin, Randy Sanovich etc.

Okay, this sounds like what I'm looking for. Thank you so much for the insight.

Keep in mind that after OMFS, interested candidates don’t just “do plastics”. If you pursue an integrated plastics residency you should have a 240+ Step 1 score and relevant publications to be a competitive applicant.

No one does a Plastics residency after an OMFS residency so they can “do facial cosmetics”. Way too many ass flaps to endure to end up focusing on procedures that you were taught in OMFS residency and that a one-year fellowship could fine-tune.

Lol... Try focusing on your first year of dental school.
Fastest route to Plastics: Drop out of dental school > go to med school > go into plastics residency

This post is like saying....

Should I retire at 65 versus 55 even though you are 25 years old.

Or should I buy a Ferrari versus a Lamborghini even though I work at a fast food joint.

Simple answer to your question: you are better off going the md route if you want to do surgery on the facial cosmetics.

I do know of a OMFS resident when I was a dental student who matched into PRS instead of the required gen surg and later left the OMFS residency.

There are a handful of OMS graduates that go on to pursue ENT or PRS. Look at OHSU or some faculty at USC for example. Others opt to do either facial cosmetics or full-body OMS cosmetics fellowships.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there one year fellowships that accepts omfs into occuloplastics?

I haven't heard of that but I also haven't looked. I know occuloplastics to be an ophtho fellowship as well.
