Hopefully someone can help..
I am HPSP and am graduating this May (2014) from ds and unfortunately I did not get into an OS program that I interviewed for. Also, I was put on wait list for AEGD. Regarding locations (which I have to give my list soon), would it benefit me to try and choose a location that has an OS program because I want to try to apply again to OS- Or does it really matter? I am really wanting to get into OS and wonder how what the chances look like getting in without doing AEGD-

Lastly, do they try and honor requests to be stationed near family?

Thanks for any help.

just out of curiosity, (if you don't mind sharing) which branch did you do hpsp through? were you interviewing for civilian programs?

Army.
No, I didn't interview through civilian programs.

You are competing against many other talented individuals. The object is to set yourself apart. Grades, GPA, class rank will be one side of things. Doing an AEGD will help set you apart from your peers. Your military performance and evaluations is the last part. Not doing an AEGD will be a disadvantage when you are compared with those that do.

Where you are stationed will have little impact. OMFS are usually at a hospital, most general dentists are not. Therefore even if you are at the same base with an OMFS program, you will not be "smoozing" with the OMFS guys.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Agreed. The main reason doing the AEGD 1 year will benefit you will be to show how you perform academically. Dental schools all vary, so it is hard to get a good feeling on your performance. If you do a 1 year in the Army, then people know what you are capable of.

what he said.

do an AEGD. make your interest known to the mentors at that location - especially the OMS ones and make yourself stand out (in a good way). don't be average. work hard in all specialties of the AEGD and prove yourself. how the OMS mentors at your AEGD perceive you can make or break your chances.

The main thing would be the letters of recommendation from the 1 year. Keep in mind if you are applying for OMS, you will not have the program complete when you apply, so the selection board may not even know you are in a one year when you apply, unless you mention it in your personal statement.
