I just finished my D1 today. Gpa is not the greatest it’s a flat 3.5. I know second year is hard but let’s say I finish second year as well with 3.5 putting my overall at 3.5. Most students finish third and fourth year of dental school with 4.0 because it is just clinical. Does D3 and D4 year count when you’re trying to do OMFS residency or not really since probably most residency programs knows that most students will get 4.0 their last two years ?

Basically any grades before 4th year (when you apply) will count, but it’s more about class rank than GPA. You could have a 3.8 at one school and be bottom 25% but have a 3.8 at another school and be top 10%. More about rank than the GPA itself.

and thats where it sucks, because some schools dont have a +/- system so someone with 90 will et 4.0 and other with 90 will get 3.67gpa.

I don't think you understand what TopDog is saying. Your school's grading system and whether it does +/- or not is irrelevant. The GPA number itself is irrelevant. Class rank (compared your current classmates) is all that matters, and your classmates are under the same grading system as you are-so it should be fair.

If your 3.5 GPA puts you in the top 25% of your class, you will be fine for OMFS. If not, then you probably can't wait for the clinic years to bring up your rank. Your rank usually doesn't change much after D2 from what I've heard, and if clinic is easy at your school then everyone will be doing well and your rank def won't change much.

Long story short, everything counts-you can't really take it easy during any of the years in dental school if OMFS is your goal. Shoot for as high a GPA as possible during D2, because after that your chances to improve your rank diminish rapidly.

Luckily you have 3 more years to bring up your GPA and programs will usually just look at your final rank and GPA.

I was 22/81 with 3.68 my first year. My final year I dropped all the way to 51/79 cumulatively with a 3.53(I got a 3.19 my 4th year by doing the minimum cases to graduate and ranked 73/79 that year. This dropped me 10 spots from third to 4th year cumulatively).

You may find second year to be harder but don't freak out if your rank drops further. Try to get A’s all the way until you graduate. Don’t get complacent third and fourth year and just do the minimum cases to graduate just so that you can chill until graduation. Do as many cases as you can to get As in clinic.

Are you an OMFS?

I want to keep my grades high, I also want to get as much experience as possible during school even though I want to specialize. Glad to know going above minimum requirements is encouraged, because I do not wish to penalize my classmates by seeking experience.

Absolutely no need to feel bad for wanting to keep your grades high. I definitely regret taking it easy my last year of school. Get as much experience as you can and keep your grades high. You never know you'll want to go back to specialize in the future(I am actually applying to a specialty and kicking myself every time I see my rank lol...)

Thank you! I think it's inspiring that you are specializing after a few years out. I would imagine your experience will more than make up for dental school GPA.
