getting ready for my first one now and I feel almost like I dont want to prepare or study. I dont want to sound rehearsed, and I think I know about myself and why I want to do OMFS to just kind of speak from the heart.

is this a terrible idea?

You should know your main points for each question, but you’re right, it shouldn’t be a rehearsed speech.

If ask you to tell me about yourself, you should have a plan to tell me about X, Y, and Z, but you can weave things together however feels right.

But I am amazed some people don’t have prepared talking points to the basic questions. I don’t want a memorized speech, but you should have your main points ready to go.

is "tell me about yourself" truly meant to be an open ended monologue about my upbringing, personality, and interests/hobbies? or is it more of like "this is briefly my story and how it led met to OMFS"

When we ask “tell me about yourself” I want to hear where you grew up, how you ended up choosing dental school, and what got you interested in surgery. But tangents are welcomed.

You’ll be asked “what do you like to do for fun?” Which is a great time to bring up interests and hobbies.
