OMFS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No offense, but this has been discussed ad nauseam. Short answer, no. Long answer is contained in hundreds of other posts if you just search "OMFS".
Thanks I’ll dig some old threads up. I appreciate it.

Focus on doing well in school before you even think about OMFS/specializing

This kinda like the same thing where in freshman college bio everyone is "premed" and wants to be a doctor.

Dont worry what @Big Time Hoosier said he's just trying to scare you

The average OMFS makes 300-400K a year at least. 2*400 = 800K. you can pay off you loans in 2 years after graduating. 😀

Well... MWU-AZ is like $100,000 a year currently before any living expenses, so at the very least $400000 at graduation not counting tuition increases and accruing interest during 4 years of school and 4/6 years of residency, plus I'm pretty sure average starting salary is less than $400k right out of residency, plus for most people at that point there could be a spouse and kids, plus rent or mortgage on a family home, plus probably two cars for most families and plenty of other expenses. I don't know how realistic paying off loans in 2 years is. @Big Time Hoosier may be trying to scare people, but he's doing it because so many people think they'll just do OMFS which realistically only 5(ish)% of dental graduates do, and that then they'll be able to pay off their loans in 2 years which probably still wouldn't be true.

Hi All,

Does the school you attend make a difference for matching into OMFS?? Would attending Midwestern dental hurt my chances for OMFS?

No, but I think they'll be the first to tell you they are training you to be a GP. That being said, you'll have a shot if your application is solid in every way... especially the CBSE.

Haha I’m usually better at picking up on that, I thought you were just being really encouraging!

Focus on CBSE and class rank. No one cares what school you go to. Certain schools are known to send more kids in oral surgery but that doesn’t make it any easier and it certainly doesn’t hurt people coming from other schools.
