Hi guys. I'm about to finish my first year and was wondering what should i do to make myself a little more competitive for ER. A little background info on me. I was an EMT-B for 5 years, got my BS and MS (so already did research). I really don't want to do research at all and most likely won't do it regardless of how much it might help me. I was thinking of volunteering at our community ER and hopefully getting an idea of how to approach cases as a physician (of course i don't remotely have the knowledge right now).

Any advice would be really helpful. Thank you guys.

This thread has had a number of views. If you are new to this forum, most will not reply to "advice" threads if the information is in previous threads.

I recommend you look through the stickies at the top of this section of SDN.

You might want to try to volunteer for medical care at any events or concerts in your area. Or go try to find some wilderness classes or a wilderness medicine certification (AWLS) that you could go do. You really need to try and do some fun things that you wont get to do otherwise or after this summer. I still have so much that I want to do but I'm not sure I'll be able to take a month or more off at a time.

Check out the wms.org page and there is a link there for student electives.

No worries. Hope you find the info you seek. In addition to what you find here, you might want to ask your dean about how matched applicants "looked" coming from your particular institution.

You'll hear this alot, but there really is no magic formula.
