I was notified that my application is "on hold" at UCSD and will not be interviewed yet. Does this mean I am getting rejected? 🙁 Does anyone have prior experience with this?

No, "on hold" does not equal a rejection. Many (if not most) applicants are placed on hold before they are interviewed. :luck:

thank you for the encouragement! UCSD is my top choice, so I was a bit sad.

Glad I could help. UCSD is a really great school, and believe me that you'll have plenty of research opportunities if you go there. It's a little lower on my list due to the H/HP/P/F grading and high lecture time, but I would still count myself very fortunate to get accepted there. 🙂

How did you know you were "on hold"? Did they tell you over the phone?

FYI, I asked Wake Forest if I'd be granted an interview because I'll be travelling near there. And they wrote back, "You are in the interviewable pool, not the pool we are interviewing at this point in time"... I guess this means I'm in the "maybe" pool, vs. the applicants who are in the "hot applicants" pool

No, it means you still have a chance, but they are still trying to determine when and if to give you an interview.

Last year, this happened to my friend, but she was put on HOLD post interview. Then she got off hold a few months later. Another person, got put on hold at the same school, and later was put on waitlist. Then that person got off waitlist. Both of those students are now at this particular medical school.

So it is hard to say what will come of it. Sometimes it will mean you never hear back, other times it will mean rejection, other times they will interview and accept you. Just hang in there and pray for the best.

I am going into my 5th year of undergrad at UCSD. We have a name for UCSD: Univeristy of California, Socially Dead (or Dysfunctional). It's a great school but La Jolla is a HORRIBLE college town and as an undergrad there really isn't that much campus life to offer. I guess it's not a big of a deal to go there as a med student cuz you're surrounded by complete nerds no matter what 😀 .

I applied to UCSD but i don't know if I could stay 12/13 years at the same institution (MSTP applicant). I think i need to see something different.

do you think it would be advantageous to write a letter of interest at this point, or should I wait it out? has anyone been in the same situation?
