Well, I had three interviews; one at NYU, one at BU, and the other at Detroit. I scheduled them so they'd be within a day or two of each other, and drove from Los Angeles to Detroit to NYU to BU. By the time I got back to L.A., I had three acceptance letters waiting, each dated and postmarked on the day the interview took place.
The interview at NYU was particularly amusing. Some excerpts (that I'm surprised I remember pretty much verbatim after repeating them so often):
Int: "So why do you want to be a dentist?"
Me: "Well, I've always been interested in healthcare and medicine. Honestly, I'd previously set my sights on becoming an MD, but not making it into medical school, I thought about alternatives. I went to my dentist to see what it was all about, and I was fascinated. I think I have an aptitude for dentistry, you know, I've a side business where I restore antique musical instruments and clocks and resell them. So I'm very much into the old-world craftsman mentality, and I'm reasonably business-oriented. You know, I can sit here and give you the song-and-dance about how much I want to change the world and help people, but one man can't change the world and if I didn't want to help people, I wouldn't be sitting here now. Bottom line, I guess, it's about lifestyle. I want to raise a family comfortably, and when you get right down to it, it's all about bringing home the bacon.
Int: "So I see you did your undergrad in the NY area. Are you excited about coming back here again? (now what does that tell you, huh?)
Me: "Well, I'm definitely familiar with the area having spent four years here. And it does have a lot to offer, there are so many interesting things here. But I really have my heart set on continuing my studies back in California. So I'm not all that thrilled about having to come back here."
Int: "Well, if you couldn't go to school back there, what would be your first choice?"
Me: "NYU."
