So, I have a paper due for a Human Sexuality class that I'm taking this semester. It just so happens that I have written a paper that completely fulfills the requirements for another course, a year ago, at another university. I was planning on just handing this paper in, since I'm too pressed for time to write a huge paper at this point in the semester. However, as the due date draws nearer, I've started getting worried about this. I checked my last class, and we had to submit it to a plagiarism site, so it's definitely in the system now. Also, I checked the student manual and apparently they DO consider that to be cheating. Have any of you been in the same situation? I don't want to risk getting an F, or worse, expelled or having disciplinary action taken against me, as I'm sure this would not look good to any schools I may be applying to.

Any thoughts, or recommendations?

It may not be plagiarism in the strict sense, but it certainly is academic dishonesty to turn that paper in. At my uni, one would get in very serious trouble for this. I guess you can hand it in if you want, but in my opinion it's not worth the risk.

Agreed, you want to hand a new one in. But if you are really pressed for time, I think you can just modify parts of your paper. That should be okay since it's your own paper.

It's academic dishonesty if the OP's school says it is, and they do.

If you've already submitted the paper to an anti-plagerism site, then I'd say it's not worth the risk. Write a new paper.

I agree, you have no way of telling if your old paper is in the database or not (well, did you turn in an electronic copy or a hard copy?)

Just edit it and keep the same flow/ideas.

Are you so smug as to think your paper is perfect as is?

Rewrite the same paper and improve upon it.

I went to college before submitting your paper to a site to check for academic dishonesty was possible. I'm kind of appalled that it's a necessity at some schools.

You do realize you can actually, plagiarize yourself, right? And that this is an actual term and a policy of academic integrity.

That's plagiarism. You'd have to acknowledge that you originally submitted it for another class in order to avoid plagiarizing yourself. No joke.

Why not talk to the Prof and see what he or she thinks about it? I had to do a paper on something in my general psych class and I asked the prof if it would be alright if I used elements of another paper I had written on a similar topic in this paper and he had no problem with it. The prof may not allow you to turn in exactly the same paper, but I reckon you may be able to get away with using bits of pieces of the paper. Good Luck either way!:luck::xf:

If you written one paper, you can write on another aspect of the same topic, update your references and be done. Would I turn in a paper that I previously turned in for another class? No, I would not even if it was at another university. You said that your university considers this cheating (actually it is because the paper was previouly graded) then why take such a risk that could potentially damage your academic standing. Rework the topic, update the references, make and outline and the paper is written. You could do this overnight.

Write a new one - a student at my high school (its been a while) got suspended for plagiarizing his own work that he turned in for another class.

If you ask me, I think it's ridiculous, but it is what it is.

Rewrite the paper, but using the same concepts/structure. Honestly, who can fault you? You're still the same person you used to be, with the same brain and same ideas. If the prompt is similar, you can only be expected to follow the same line of thinking as you did before.

just put tiny quotation marks around the whole paper. that'll solve it.

but seriously i think you can plagiarize yourself

Do what I did, I asked my professor. I told him I had written the paper back in high school and it fit the topic of the class. I told him that I feel that it makes sense for the assignment and that I can revise and add new opinions and sources to it, and he was fine with it and I ended up getting an A. It all depends on your professor but ask first.
