Hey,
This is just a question I've had for awhile now. Once you become a PA, is there any other job you can do? I've always been interested in teaching and research, university type work, so I've generally just eliminated the idea of being a PA- because nurse PhDs do fill those roles, while PAs do not. Or so I thought! But then I realized: I really don't know if PAs do research/teaching or not.
So do they>?

yup...do a search on these names....
rod hooker, pa-c, phd
lyle larson, pa-c, phd
james cawley, pa-c, mph

as a pa you can always revert to your prior health career if you keep certs current(medic, rt, rn, etc just like an np can always work as an rn)
you can teach, you can do research, you can administrate.
a pa is the new dean of the medical school at mesa arizona.
you can work for the state dept and staff any embassy in the world.
the 24/7 medical consultant in the white house is always a pa.
you can work as a paid peace corps medical officer.
you can work for the cia.
you can staff the medical clinic in antarctica.
you can become an AA, MD, DO
you can become an author( do a search for j. michael jones, pa-c, author of several books including an excellent book on understanding headaches for the non-neurologist).
you can work abroad in any # of countries starting up pa programs. in the last yr I have gotten job offers in england, scotland, canada, and australia.
you can teach at programs for other health professionals.I sometime teach paramedic school. I have a friend who teaches anatomy at a local college to entry level health professionals.
you can work as a traveling/locums pa anywhere in the country for several different companies so you can work where and when you want. month on/month off, 3 months/yr, etc
you can work for NOAA(natl oceanographic and atmospheric administration) or NASA as a medical officer.
in a growing # of states you can own your own clinic and hire an administrative md to meet the min oversight requirements for the state.generally this means chart review.
pretty much anything an np can do(except maybe teach at an np program) a pa can do.

There are more than a few PhD PAs. About 1% of PAs overall work in research areas and about 0.5% work in public health. Around 1.5% work in non PA medical education and about 2% work in administration. Of course PA education is also part of this at about 4-5% of PAs. While the vast majority of PAs work in clinical practice there are other areas that you can go into, just like any medical profession.

PA is a great profession but a PA is not dean of the medical school.

Douglas Wood, D.O., Ph.D. is.

You can also do work in pathology as an investigator for the medical examiners office ,some jurisdictions hire PAs for this type of work. Also some organ and tissue procurement agencies like to hire PAs , because of their sound anatomical and medical background.

Thank you for the info! I am really interested in teaching and writing and maybe doing research, and I've been trying to find the right field to go into where I can accomplish these professional goals. I am interested in mental health and women/children's health in particular.
So, although I'm not sure what I want, being a PA seems like a good place to be because there are so many opportunities within that field, and many specialities one can be in.
