yes, I am one of those naive applicants who went for MD schools only, but couldn't get in (2nd time applying, 1 post II R, 1 silence post-II) and now looking into DO schools for next cycle. Bottom line is that I know I need to work on shadowing multiple DOs and acquire LORs. Is there anything else I should be working on? My interview skills is probably my other weakness.

some quick stats and info about me that may help.
  1. LM 71; 512 (124 CARS); 3.89 sgpa; 3.8cgpa.
  2. undergrad from mid tier UC c/o 2017.
  3. ORM
  4. residence HI, but can change to CA if it helps
  5. extensive clinical and non clinical volunteering experience (at hospitals, children, beach, tutoring homeless, trauma intervention, ER, AIDS foundation)
  6. front desk and MA 2 yrs experience. currently working as a medical admin staff assistant
  7. no research pub but enrolled for a clinical study group for a while.
  8. as of now, can acquire 1 MD, 1 science, 0 non-science, 2 volunteer LORs.
  9. LGBTQ and talked about recovering from HPV in my personal statement.

Any DO schools I should not include (i.e. in-state bias, religious reasons, etc)? something I should look/read into?

thank you in advance.

Given your stats, it wasnt naive to apply MD only. When were you complete both times? School list? Red flags? IA?

No IA. Clean record.
red flags I can think of. Maybe generic LOR?
I’m an Airbnb super host? Talked about std in personal statement?

First time was around late September/early October.
Second time complete around mid-late August.

First time school list: Dartmouth, uci, UCSD, UCLA, usc, Mayo,Albany, stony brook,Iowa carter,Drexel,Ohio, Sidney kimmel, rush, wake forest, Hofstra, Emory, Wayne state, HI

Second time school list: submitted secondaries wake forest, Hawaii, tufts, seton hall, Georgetown, geisinger, George Washington, UCI, Drexel.

My second list was longer but one of my science LOR ghosted so these were the ones I ended up being complete. didnt have non-science letter both times so that limited my choices as well.

Well that is what sunk you. You applied way too late the first time and too late the second time for being a reapplicant.

Youre a HI resident? Why didn’t you apply there the first time? UCI, UCLA, UCSD, Emory, Iowa, Mayo, USC, and Stony Brook were all donations. Second time your list wasn’t long enough and contained too many low-yield schools. Geinsinger favors people from NEPA, so that wasn’t the best choice.

sorry I misunderstood complete as secondary complete. First time my amcas primary was complete around early August. second time late june.

forgot to add in that list. I did apply to HI, but as a CA resident. I then moved back to HI since I realized CA med schools were so competitive to give myself the best chances for Hawaii med school.

Where were your 2 interviews ?

HI and seton hall. Recently rejected from HI, seton is silence (attended II in late jan.) I realized my chances are slim as someone was accepted from my II day (in late feb) and I heard nothing back. assuming the worst.

You certainly should apply to at least 6 DO schools this time and you are competitive for all DO schools. However, you would have received more MD interviews if you had applied to many more appropriate schools. I suggest all these MD schools also:
Hawaii
Seton Hall
Vermont
Quinnipiac
New York Medical College
Albany
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
St. Louis
Creighton
Tulane
TCU-UNTHSC (new school)
Kaiser
California University
Loma Linda

i took the mcat in Jan 2017. Will it still be good for next cycle?
