Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I took one semester of Biology in UG, if I would be eligible for the career-changer Post-Baccs.

I honestly only vaguely remember my Bio class (I think I took it as a freshman), since I have 3 years of law school under my belt.

Hello Inygma. Yes, if your only science as an undergrad was one semester of Biology, you are still eligible for the career-changer Post-bacc programs. I took Genetics as a freshman in college and was still admitted to career-changer programs. I'm not sure at which point someone has taken too much science, but I know that one can even major in one of the sciences and still be a career-changer if one didn't take any of the rest.

Just to be safe I would contact the institution before applying. I was rejected from NYU's postbacc program because I had taken one semester of bio and one semester of chem. Their website made it sound like if you had taken a few courses it was still okay to apply. Just make sure before you waste your time and money applying.

Hi everyone,

Many, but not all of the career-changer postbacc programs will consider applicants who have taken 2 semesters or fewer of bio, gen chem, or physics, but often will NOT consider you if you've taken orgo or >2 semesters of the sciences.

This may be a difference in how we are using the term 'career changer postbacc,' but I must admit that I'm not sure why you would want to take a semester of bio now if you're going to be entering a career changer program in the near future.

I generally interpret 'career changer program' to mean something like the one-year formal programs @ Goucher or Bryn Mawr. In that context, taking a semester of bio prior to applying is unlikely to significantly benefit you, but has the potential to harm your application, either because some career-changer programs may reject applicants with a semester of bio, or if your grade in the class is not stellar. If your goal is just to refamiliarize yourself with biological concepts prior to taking a course, then you may be just as well served by reading on your own.

Good luck!
