Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship
Program Features
The Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Department of Ophthalmology is accepting applications for a one-year ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive fellowship beginning July, 2023.
Dr. Charles Rice who is an ASOPRS member will be the preceptor. This is a one year non ASOPRS fellowship offering excellent clinical and surgical experience so that the fellow will be well prepared to treat functional and cosmetic cases. Following fellowship training, the fellow would be qualified to seek an ASOPRS membership according to ASOPRS guidelines. The individual may also have an opportunity to remain on staff as an assistant professor after approval from the chairman of the department.
About Dr. Rice
As director of the ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive service, Dr. Rice’s experience in academic medicine and private practice offers the candidate ideal training to ensure a successful preparation for private practice or academic position. His medical training was at LSU Medical School New Orleans followed by residency at Wake Forest Baptist. Fellowship training was under Dr. Robert Kersten at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He served as director of the oculoplastics service and residency program director at the University of Arkansas from 1987 until 1997. From 1997 through 2019, he was in private practice at Lansing Ophthalmology, East Lansing, Michigan performing functional and cosmetic surgery. He developed a skin care center, Arriva Cosmetic Center, with two full time estheticians who offered skin care treatments such as Hydrafacial treatments, intense pulsed light, laser hair removal, and superficial laser resurfacing. Cosmetic procedures included lower lid blepharoplasty, erbium skin resurfacing, intense pulsed light treatments, facial fillers, and Botox injections. Trading the snowblower for sunscreen, Dr. Rice joined the faculty at Wake Forest Baptist Eye Department in 2019. His goal is to share his clinical and surgical expertise with residents and fellows in order to promote and provide excellence in oculoplastic surgery.
Description of Fellowship
After fellowship, the fellow will be competent in all aspects of oculoplastic surgery. This includes functional procedures such as upper blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, browplasty, ectropion, entropion, eyelid retraction, gold weight placement, and eyelid reconstruction. Lacrimal procedures include repair of canalicular lacerations, nasolacrimal duct probe with silicone tube intubations, and dacryocystorhinostomy. Opportunities exist for collaboration with other services such as otolaryngology, plastic surgery, and dermatology. Cosmetic procedures include treatments utilizing the Sciton erbium laser for resurfacing and broad band light for facial rejuvenation in which Dr. Rice has extensive clinical experience. His present fellow is Dr. Nathan Anderson, former chief resident at Wake Forest who will join St. George Eye Center in St. George, Utah.
Training includes participation in resident education including monthly oculoplastic teaching conferences, ophthalmology grand rounds, and neuroimaging conferences. A weekly resident’s clinic is staffed for oculoplastic patients.

Within easy driving distance are the mountains of western Carolina offering hiking, mountain climbing, and fishing. All applicants must have completed an ophthalmology residency at a program accredited by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada prior to entering the fellowship. An active North Carolina license will be required.
