I have a major that does not require calculus, and so I wonder, with my semester of college algebra and semester of trig, is that sufficient for DO programs tht require one year of math? I looked through other posts but no one seems to count algebra, but rather calc I & II.

Only way to know for sure is to call schools and get a consensus. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't count though because many applicants take those courses in high school. Many even take AP calc.

Perhaps some recent applicants can share their experiences throughout this cycle.

I think you should be fine; some DOs don't even require Math, eg Western, Michigan State. But if you did well in chemistry and physics, Calculus should be an easy A: do yourself a favor and boost your GPA. If not, then avoid calculus like the plague.

Good luck.

Im taking college algebra now just to fulfill that requirement. I only took calc 1 in college. Only a handful of the schools I applied to require more than 4 credits of math and I think they're all MD

This really depends on the schools you are applying to. If you are considerably worried, call the schools up and see what the minimum requirements are. If your trig and algebra is considerably strong, I do recommend continuing onto calculus to boost up your GPA. I'm sure much of the MD schools requires calculus. I highly advise to take Calc 1 and 2 as it makes you a stronger applicant.
