I am currently looking into online biochem courses and would like the advice of anyone who has taken any of these as to which programs to go for or which programs to stay away from.

...my background: Degree in Biology (how biochem was not required, I don't know), not currently living near a school that offers biochem, have taken genetics, cell bio, micro bio, and a chem course...all of which had bits and pieces of biochem but nothing major.

I am hoping to pick up this couse as to not exclude myself from the schools that have it as a pre-req. I really don't want to end up in "over my head" and not succeed in a class that I am taking as a pre-req. I have spoken to the schools and they require that I have proof of enrollment by the time of an interview.

All ideas/opinions are welcome.

Thanks!
Muah.

I recommend the online Biochemistry 3021 class from the University of Minnesota. You can view the lectures with Quicktime or Realplayer (streaming video). The lectures are from the actual class on campus. The content was excellent with 4 exams. It was also term-based so you finish the class in a timely manner. Also, Dr. Anderson teaches very slowly (repetitive) which really helps to reinforce the material.

I took the class last fall (used Realplayer) and was very impressed. The tests are mostly short answer, multiple choice, fill in the blank, and one essay question. The class is definitely "memorization-intensive", so be prepared to learn structures. The best thing is that you have access to old exams, which are basically identical year to year. I believe about 20% of students that take the class receive A's.

I took 2 semesters of biochem @ Iowa State University. The first semester was well stuctured with regular a quiz or test every week and lectures delivered on CD... this was really nice because I could watch them at my convenience. The second semester was basically a self-paced correspondence course. I would watch the lectures and email the proff when I was ready for a test, 4 per semester. If you have any specific questions, pm me.

I took the UNE biochem class. The class is delivered via videotaped lectures. There is only one test that counts (the final) and it's proctored, though practice tests (from the actual campus-based class) are included. Though some of the test questions are based on rote memorization, most of them are application-based. Personally, I enjoyed it. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more info.

what about the lab? there is a class called induction to biochem and I was wondering if this would fulfill the requirement for med school. (yes I am aware that only certain school require biochem!!) 😀

check into weber state university. i took a chemistry class + lab online, and it was great. all of my schools accepted the credits, and it was MUCH easier and less time consuming than taking it in a classroom. hope that helps!

I was not aware most general biochem courses had labs. Our schools required biochem lab for biochem majors was 8 hours long, so not sure if you really want to do that under most circumstances anyways.

I would think almost anything with the word biochem would fulfill the requirement. Once again, from my school we had two seperate biochem courses. One was a general biochem course for non-biochem majors where if you studied the Lippincotts you'd ace the thing. The other was more technical and required you to sleep with one or more TAs.
