I'm thinking about taking my chemistry courses at Oregon State University through the ecampus program. They offer the course and lab online for the whole year sequence and even organic chemistry. I'm in the Air Force overseas so this seems like the only option. Will medical schools care if I take my chemistry this way? OSU is a regionally accredited university so I don't think there is a problem, but I want to make sure.

How the heck does the online lab work? I'm taking orgo through correspondence (and a bunch of other courses), and for all lab courses except for physics, I have to go to an actual lab session at one of the universities in my province. I just suffered 2 straight weekends of microbiology labs, for example (8 to 5 each day). I don't understand how an online lab would work...I did home labs for physics, but that's easier, since none of the equipment is hazardous - bunch of wires and a multimeter - but Orgo is a whole different beast.

Check credit #, it must be a 4 credit class (3 lecture, 1 lab). Unfortunately I believe the transcripts for many online classes will say distance course or such (I looked into it myself for biochem). In which case the med school will not like that you did not set foot into a real lab.

Accredited or not, many medical schools don't like the idea of online prereqs. You should try to find out how the course will show up on your transcript. If there is any mention of distance learning, you should contact the schools in which you are interested to see what their policy is on this.

The labs work by "virtual lab". I used a demo for the class. You pretty much click on which chemicals to use and type in how many ml to mix with something else and it tells you what reaction occured. It is a 4 unit course. I will find out if the transcript will identify it as a distance course or not. If it has no mention of it being a distance course everything should be ok right?

All pre- med science classes have to be taken in traditional class room setting. Most of the medical schools wont count that class. How do you do a lab online?

My biology class in 4 credits, 3 lecture, 1 lab.
Is that a problem? All lower division science classes at my school are 4 credits.

I checked it out and it says that the courses taken online at this university shows no difference from on-campus courses on the transcript. So there's no way for medical schools to know it's an online taught course right?

No, not a problem, that's what it's supposed to be!

I would just call a med school and check. Med schools usually know these classes because only a handful of such online classes are offered in the US.
For instance, I was going to take biochem from University of New england. Well it turns out that most med schools know that University of New england offers the class online. So whether the transcript says it or not they know.
I just would not risk it on a prerequisite such as chem.

that was the best answer i could get. thanks!

wow... that's very futuristic... taking a lab online lol
why not pick up girls and have sex with them online too? lol
