Hello! I am a non-traditional prospective applicant with a bachelor's degree but in need of taking several pre-requisites prior to applying. I am stuck in a predicament however - I am a military spouse and we're unfortunately currently stationed in a remote location about 3 hours away from a college or university.

I am considering taking my pre-requisites online (with labs) however I know it is not preferable for admissions compared to in-person. I did call several of the schools I want to apply to and they did say the classes would be accepted but would prefer that I take them in person. Another option I am considering is moving from my spouse and pups to complete the pre-requisites.

Has anyone been accepted or run into any issues with several science pre-requisites taken online?

Thanks so much!

It's all going to hinge on the rest of your application. There is no one way to be accepted except to show you are a well rounded individual with something desirable to offer for diversity in an accepted class. No way to tell except to do your best to show who you are and what you bring to the table.

When do you next PCS? I’m a military spouse also and applied to vet school this cycle. When my husband was last up for orders we picked places based on whether or not we’d be in proximity of a college I could take prereqs at (also a post-bacc/non-trad student). With PCS orders you get the resident tuition rate so that’s a huge thing to consider as well. If you were to move away from your SO for school I’m not sure that you’d be able to get resident tuition using his/her orders unless the school is in the same state or within a certain proximity of the school.

I didn’t personally take any courses online but I’ve heard of people taking online prereqs through the University of New England. They’re pretty costly though. I would highly recommend researching the schools you think you want to apply to and making sure they accept UNE’s prereqs before you sink that much money into it.

Edited to add: Use MyCAA to pay for your prereqs if you can!! Sadly I didn’t qualify and paid out of pocket 🙁

Which classes do you need to take?

I ask because I'd imagine you might have more trouble with the labs than the lectures. I don't know how they would even handle something like an organic chem lab online because you often need specialized equipment like fume hoods and stuff.

As long as the schools you are applying to said it's ok though, I would assume it is ok... just be sure to check with each school individually about each class because what is considered acceptable will likely vary a lot between schools and even between pre-reqs.

In case it helps:
I was non-trad too and did most of my pre-reqs + labs in person at UC Berkeley Extension (would recommend), but also did a couple mostly-online lecture courses through Harvard Extension (also would recommend. They were "mostly" online because I had to go there for exams or hire a proctor). Also did an online stats course through UCLA, which was meh but got the job done. No problems with any of those being accepted at the school where I applied.

Hey! I was a non-traditional student last year. My bachelors is a BA, so I also needed to take several prerequisites, mostly of the lab-type. I took several lab classes online. These included Biology I & II with labs (online thru East Central Community College), General Chem I & II with labs, Orgo Chem I & II w labs, Microbiology w lab, and Physics I & II w labs. (The chems, micro, and physics were online thru Barton Community College.) I received offers from six schools: LMU, Midwestern, Ross, Michigan, Minnesota, and my personal favorite - UC Davis. I’m currently in my first year at Davis and loving it! Please let me know if I can provide any additional information!

I took most of my science prereqs online. Only Physics 1 and 2 were in-class, but I couldn’t find either available online in 2016 or I would have done that, too. I’d prioritize schools that don’t care vs. ones that prefer in-class credits. VA-MD doesn’t care and has many non-trad students in each class.

I took biochem through UC Berkeley extension. Michigan state recommended it to me as an option. They also said I could take it through UNE or Oregon state

Thanks so much, ViggoVet! That is super helpful. Did these classes have virtual labs (that you did online) or lab kits that you completed in your own kitchen?

In short, it depends on which instructor teaches the course and the curriculum does change from year to year as it has with my online courses. Some classes use both virtual and lab kits while others just use one. I would recommend contacting the instructor and asking him/her directly.
