So my question is an online degree ok for medical school? As long as all the pre-req courses are taken in a class room setting? This might be in case a family member is ill and needs help and an online degree is much more feasible. Sorry if this has been posted before but looking for an answer. Thanks

I think it would depend on where you got it from. Phoenix or DeVry? Probably not. An online degree from your local Uni? I doubt medical school would even know you got your degree online as your transcript probably just says your major and your grades. I've taken online courses for my B.S. degree and my transcript does not indicate that they were online. Not sure how you'd fare with the labs as I doubt you can do those online.

Definitely do your prereqs in-seat. It's not only easier to keep up because it forces you to actually exist in the same space as the material, it's the easiest way to make sure they are accepted by all med schools. You may be able to get away with the social sciences online, but I wouldn't risk it. For a full degree, I would honestly take it in-seat if possible. If it really isn't possible at all, at least make sure you get the degree from a reputable online college, preferably associated with your state university if available. It would probably be better if you did an evening degree in-seat than online if that's an option.

I hope the situation doesn't arise for you, but if it does, best of luck.

When you say online are you talking Devry/University of Phoenix?

Thanks bears1992 and SnowyMoon
@MD_Odyssey - no, not Devry or Phoenix. Tis my state school. Hopefully I will not have to face this situation but was just wondering if its needed. thanks much for the replies. Love sdn.

I called a few schools about online pre-reqs where exams were taken on campus, and all schools said they would NOT accept those credits. So, as others have said, make an effort to take all prerequisite classes and major science classes on campus. You could do the rest of your classes online. Some schools specifically ask if you have taken any classes online, so be prepared to answer those questions (often they just want to know what classes and why). As long as you are aware of the requirements of the medical schools you are interested in, then you might be able to create a schedule that meets the requirements while simultaneously fitting your schedule.

Yes, we have labs for online classes. We use lab kits for online general chemistry and online physics. Virtual labs are used for online organic chemistry.

Although I do not teach biology, there are lab kits available for online biology--I happen to have one in my classroom and I will say that I am impressed by the quality of the lab kits.
