Hello you all. I am trying to organize my schedule for next semester. My school offers phys online. Tests must be taken in person. Has anyone got in having taken 2 online science pre-requisites. It dose not show up on my transcript and Dental school does not mention anything about online classes but med school does. Any thoughts?

Some dental schools do mention if they accept/don't accept online classes. For example, UCLA states that they don't accept online classes for pre-reqs. So, you just need to do your research on the schools you're planning on applying to (which may include emailing the school directly & asking).

Yes UCLA mentions it. But some schools do not say anything about it. I will send them an email.

I encourage you to take (or audit) online science courses as doing so will prepare you better for when you take the actual face-to-face course as well as the DAT/MCAT. As an instructor, I know that it takes a few times through the material for a student to truly master the material.

I'm currently taking Biochemistry online. None of the schools have said anything about it being an issue. However, I didn't apply to UCLA.

Yeah, I emailed them and they are ok with it. Med school has a different criteria.

A safer thing to do is to not take classes online. It's still an up and coming trend and does not replace the virtues of taking a class with a group of people at a physical location. So, I'd recommend against it.

In an ideal world, I agree with your statements. However, we live in an non-ideal world where there needs to be compromise. Many of my students cannot commit to day classes due to jobs/family/etc. As educators, we have to come up with good solutions and compromises.

From my limited experience and speaking to admissions offices at Texas dental schools, they absolutely don’t accept any form of online class for pre-reqs.

That will probably change in the next several years. Usually, a change will occur when one of the following happens: a.) a child of a Congressman/Senator/lawmaker/etc does not get in. b.) The federal student loan program becomes aware of this type of situation c.) a lawsuit happens d.) The Department of Education becomes aware of the situation.

Exactly, It is not like you are using Google to pass the class. You have to take the tests on campus. Why do they even offer online classes then if professional schools dont take them serious. Times are changing and we have to evolve.

Some classes only offer the lecture component online. Others offer a lab simulation online

Labs for online classes use a lab kit in which you do experiments at home such as titrations, flame tests, decompose hydrogen peroxide, etc. Also, simulations on the computer can be done.

Actually, I encourage students to use Google and to work together, especially with people who are more knowledgeable than they are (i.e., tutors, teachers, older siblings, etc.). However, my courses have a focus on critical thinking and not just memorizing facts. I want my students to be able to think, judge, analyze, etc. These are the skills that employers and professional schools want.
