Hi, I am planning on applying to DPT schools this year, but only wanted to apply to schools that do not require the GRE. I am doing so because I feel I have too low of GRE scores and don't make the minimum requirement for a lot of schools.
143 Verbal/148 Quantitative/4.0 Analytical Writing.
My undergrad cumGPA is 3.3.
Over 200 observation hours at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, outpatient free-standing clinic and outpatient pediatrics.

Is it not a good idea to just apply to schools that don' require the GRE? Should I try retaking the GRE and getting a better score? Do I have a chance of getting into any school?

How many schools don't require the GRE? Do you like these schools and think you'll get accepted? If you have the time and money, you might want to retake the GRE, just because you'll be able to apply to so many more schools that way.

4.0 AW is average for accepted PT applicants, 148Q is probably 6-ish points below average and that could be accomplished by studying harder for a retake. Your real issue is the verbal score. That needs to go up by at least 12 points to be close to par. Do you think it is possible that you could improve that much with a retake, or close to. If you got your scores up a bit with a retake you could also target not only schools that don't require the GRE, but also schools that don't have a minimum score set and/or don't place heavy emphasis on GRE scores when ranking applicants. It will take a lot of research and calling admissions offices to find out which school you should best target with your stats, but it would widen your options greatly and probably improve your odds of being able to go to a cheaper/state school, depending on where you live.

143V is only the 18th percentile...but 4.0AW is 56th percentile. What do you think went wrong that you did so poorly on the verbal. Was it just a bad test day/anxiety levels? Clearly you speak and understand English fine if you were able to perform around the median on writing. I would take some time to figure out what you can do to perform better on a retake, and then go for it. Though if you are applying right now, you don't have a lot of time. Maybe see if there are still any August test dates available in your area and then spend a couple of weeks really dedicating yourself to preparing. There are lots of good threads on here about the GRE and how to prepare, advice you get varies widely. I've written several lengthy posts on the subject in the past that I think are pretty good. 😉

The lovely FAQ thread that just got stickied at the top of this forum has links to a dozen or so great threads on GRE advice. Best of luck.

There are about 15 schools that do no require the GRE, I believe. Verbal was always difficult for me because I felt there was just so many vocabulary words that I didn't know the meaning of. I always scored lower on verbal than quant when doing the practice tests. I studied using magoosh and bought GRE books, but verbal was difficult for me. Some other factors for me performing poorly is that I do get a little test anxiety and it was my first time taking the GRE. The analytical writing was not too much of a problem for me, I feel confident on my writing skills. However, you have persuaded me into wanting to re-take the GRE.

I have another question, if I want to re-take it, do I have to wait for my results and then submit my PTCAS application? Or do I submit my application, and then send in my GRE scores to my targeted schools once I receive my results? Because on PTCAS, it says "Apr 15, 2016 Last recommended date for applicants to take GRE for 2015-16". So can I turn in my application in around August, and then take my GRE around October and then send in my GRE scores once I get them? Thank you for all the help!

Last Summer, I applied to Pt school with similar GRE scores. 142- VERBAL. 145- Quant and a 4 in the writing portion. I applied to ten schools. Interviews at 4. Rejected at 6. Only one of those schools didn't require the GRE. My gpa was a 3.57 for both Science and Cumm. I highly recommend you apply to schools that don't have a minimum requirement for the GRE. So take a chance and roll the dice (wisely).

Better to try and fail than to not try and wonder.

Best of luck!

Wow, thanks for the advice and letting me know about your experience! I was hesitant to apply to schools with no minimum requirement for the GRE, but now I think I will give it a shot.

Just remember if you submit in August and take the GRE later, some schools may have made interview decisions already (look at when each school does this). In that case, retaking later wouldn't help you. So choose your schools and test dates carefully. (Yes the school "allows" you to take the GRE later but for you the scores will be an important factor.)

You might want to check out the GRE section for study tips here: Frequently Asked Questions

I think you should retake it, since getting a score >300 will open up about 200 more schools that you can apply to. For verbal, I would focus a lot more on test-taking strategies than memorizing a bunch of vocab words. If you're concerned about learning a bunch of definitions anyways, I recommend these books: Word Power Made Easy and GRE Vocab Capacity.

It is possible that you can get into one of the fifteen or so schools that don't require the GRE, but if you think you can study differently and raise your score by 10 points, then it might be worth it!

I have similar stats with 143 on verbal and 149 for quant, and my gpa is 3.48. Do you think I have a chance of getting into PT school? (Anyone, please feel free to answer). I am applying to schools where I meet their minimum GRE requirement, and to schools that do not require the GRE. To anyone with experience in applying to PT schools in the past, would applying within the first two weeks of July help at all with rolling admissions? Also, do rolling admission schools simply just accept applications if they meet the minimum along with other things taken into consideration?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Also, I do not have the time to retake the GRE anymore because I would like to submit my PTCAS application this week.

You're going to hear this a lot in pt school.- "It Depends"

AT still is one school that has a substantially lower GRE score, but the chances of being accepted are genuinely higher if you submit a littler earlier in the process. (was told their class filled up by September).

I'd recommend applying to TJU, touro, UNE, midwestern Downer's grove/glendale maybe even St. Aug . Not saying any of these programs are terrible for accepting students with lower GPA/GREs, but they are definitely on the higher end in terms of tuition. Hence, why it may be a little easier to get accepted. I was waitlisted for UNE all the way up until the beginning of May before taken off. I'm sure one of these schools will take you no doubt.

If there was one thing I learned from the application process, it's patience. It was hard waiting 3 years to finish my pre-reqs/hours/GRE to even apply to Pt school. Way more challenging to be patient waiting to hear back for an interview. It was extremely difficult to be patient to hear back for something after the interview. The worst definitely has to be remaining patient while waiting to hear back for an acceptance when you're on the wait list.

Good luck!

I definitely feel more confident about applying now! Thanks a lot for your honest feedback. 🙂

What schools did you apply to? What schools did get an interview from? What school did you get into?! Thanks

What was your GPA when accepted to these schools?
