hi everyone..
I just wonder what r the consequences if i do not participate in extracurricular activities..

EC's are only helpful to make you more competitive if you are applying for competitive residencies, but if you want peds/OB/FP/IM, you really don't have to do any of it, unless you barely passed the Step 1 and/or had horrible grades.

What do you mean by ECs exactly... like student council and whatnot?

As far as I know they have no bearing on your acceptance to residencies. Research and clinical experience might but not stuff like the frisbee club and whatnot

All they really want to know is if you'll be a good physician, and ideally not a total d-bag. Some places might like volunteer work, but overall it is not nearly as important as doing well in school.

not sure why "clinical experience" would matter to residency programs. it's not like applying to med school--do you really think a couple extra hours of shadowing as an MS2 will matter after you've had more than 5,000 hours of clinical time as an MS3/4?

Perhaps the poster was referring to work abroad types of "clinical experiences"?

Those are always nice to have and help one stand out... imo, at least. Although even with those, international rotations as MS3/4 would probably serve the same function.

Clearly, grades and Step 1 are even more important to residencies than grades and MCAT to med schools. (I.e. the other stuff doesn't matter nearly as much... so I hear.)

I meant doing AIDS or TB missions or whatever abroad. That stuff does look pretty good and makes you stand out.

The main factor is still obv Step 1, with 3rd year grades following closely behind
