okay, so I am a 2nd year and want to know what to do to right now to get an ortho residency. I am starting bench orhto research, started studying for the step 1 and have been shadowing ortho surgery (scrubbing, cutting sutures, boving, retractin) about 1 day week (10hrs). Now what else should I be doing??

PS. I know because of the title i will get sarcastic idiotic remarks from immature orthos. (I would be doing the same thing..haha)

Sigh...you're doing all the wrong things.

Allow me to point you in the right direction:

Simplify. All you really need to be doing is excelling in your classes. With that comes both good grades and good board scores. Research is helpful, but don't let it distract you from your classes. Shadowing, while it may be interesting for you, will not influence your application.

LOL. Thanks for the advice guys. I guess what I need to do is stop shadowing and hit the gym.... 🙂
Smart orthos? Funny cuz the resident I am shadowing always says "orthos are twice as strong but 1/2 as smart" . I dont know whether he is insulting himself but it is semi-true!

ditto to all that was said above.

your shadowing does help. it gives you face time with that programs attendings. a known is better than an unknown any day.

you must remember what ddmo said:

All you really need to be doing is excelling in your classes. With that comes both good grades and good board scores.

i have told many students that have come to my office. "don't tie my hands." if you do poorly on these, it makes it had for someone to push for you. you need to at least be with the pack of applicants, not below them.
