Can someone please tell me if I am thinking of this correctly/if I am saying any of this incorrectly?

Ovulation is triggered by a spike in LH, which triggers a primary oocyte to resume mitosis from Prophase I (while still in the follicle?) and first polar body is expelled. After which it is spit out into abdominal cavity, then oviduct at which point it stops in MetaphaseII where it can be fertilized by a sperm.

At this point if it is fertilized it will finish off Meiosis 2 and after this point is the 2nd polar body expelled?

Also, what is the ploidy of the 2nd polar body, are the egg and 2nd polarbody fertilized, and therefore 2n?

Thanks in advance!

Wikipedia is your best friend here!

The egg has to undergo complete meiosis before it is fertilized. The mature ovum and the other three polar bodies all end up with a ploidy of "n".

That is my take on it.

Great internet reference eatsleepmed! I also love Wikipedia 😉

And don't forget - the polar bodies stay INSIDE the ovum!
