sorry to clog the boards today...

how do people feel about opening a personal statement with "i plan to devote my career as a clinical psychologist..." my other thought is to open with a description of the problem i want to study, why it's important and then say i plan to devote my career to it. i've gotten feedback that the first one is a little boring, but i was under the impression personal statements should be more like journal articles than college entrance essays. any advice?
 
I'm not crazy about it....

Funny story...I put on my CV once under skills: "Super Human Strength" sort of as a joke and to see if people actually read these things. On a practicum interview they asked me to prove it by moving furniture. I got the job...don't mess with me!
 
it doesn't knock it out of the park for me...

How about start with 1. what you want to do with your degree and then ask yourself 2. why?

ie: what you want to do? strengthen relationships by working with couples.
Why? "I place a high value on relationships because I believe that is what makes us uniquely human."

Or...

what you want to do? -to make the largest contribution to society by working with troubled youth.

Why? "My Grandfather, and greatest influence, frequently asked me "how will you make a difference in this world?". His adage to me became an overarching life plan. I eventually decided that working with ..."

An english teacher gave me this advice.
