Do an American residency. Chances are very slim otherwise.

Congrats... however, if you want to do Ophthalmology here or in Canada, you will need to repeat a US or Canadian residency. (Trust me, good friend did his ophthalmology residency at Kasr Al-Aini....and had to redo it here. Made him a great resident...but still frustrating.)

What some do is come here after they complete a residency.... do a fellowship... and then hope to get a residency where they did their fellowship. (Backwards, but sometimes works.)

Matching in an ophthalmology residency for IMGs is VERY difficult. VERY difficult. You may just want to enjoy being a EU-ophthalmologist. 🙂 Less hassle with regards to insurance/malpractice, and still a great practice environment... plus you have much better mobility.

thank you all for reply i Know it will be very very hard to get ophth residency in USA. but i thought if i am a specialist i just can do usmle and some board exam to be registered in USA . that would save me more than 3 years if i goto usa an start research and stuff . and might not get ophth but i heared some german doctors goto USA did they redo residency again ??

I personally know a few foreign-trained ophthalmologists who practice at major academic centers (without re-training). These doctors were distinguished, internationally known physicians in their home countries. My understanding is that it is up to the individual academic institution's administration as well as the chairman of the department to grant privileges to practice medicine to a foreign-trained doctor under the umbrella of the said institution. Like I said, these are very rare instances granted to the distinguished, internationally known physicians.

A state still has to license that person. There are also issues with insurance company credentialing and malpractice coverage as well.

I am a final year medical student from Egypt, I wants to practice Ophthalmology in the US and I have searched alot about that.

The Conclusion is:

The easiest way (Not really easy but gives you a better chance) is to do a fellowship in the US after finishing your residency in Germany then after the fellowship you do the residency again in the US.

The shorter way but with a very low chances is to apply for a US residency directly after you finish in Germany or even before...it doesn't make a difference.

My Opinion: if you intend to comeback to Egypt again, don't waste your time and money. Germany is be pretty COOL option 🙂 , Ofcourse not as the USA but still far away better than the **** that is waiting me here 😀.

And may I ask you how did you get your residency there?

Germany acknowledge our degree and i just sent emails to universities there but you have first to reach level 6 in German language and for more info google.com is your friend
