how big of a disadvantage is it to go to a med school with a subpar ophthalmology program when it comes time to apply for ophthalmology residencies?

Hi there. Okay, good job getting my attention with the bump! 😉

The biggest disadvantage is that your letter may not come from influential people; however, ophthalmology is a small community so most likely someone from another program will know your letter writer. For instance, I had Neil Miller write my letter. Every one knows Neil Miller. I was lucky enough to graduate from Hopkins, and I had access to awesome faculty.

Other than the above, programs don't really think about the ophthalmology program at your school. Programs do care, however, about the caliber of school you graduate from.

Good luck!

You can always arrange to spend a month with Dr. Miller or any other faculty member at Wilmer and get a LOR that way. Good luck!

thanks for the advice, I go to Tulane and I know the department was put on probation or something like that but I still have a few years left so hopefully they can get their act together.

Why would anyone want to spend a month at Wilmer?! 😛
