Hey Doctors

I am Dr Waleed .. an ophthalmologist from Egypt .. have got FRCS
& honored Star Award from American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2009
for the best research in the world .. I intend to do clinical research with my colleagues in California & wanna take USMLE to take fellowship also

I wanna know what are my chances? & how to make them better

Thanks in advance

Opthalmology is one of the most competitive fields in the US. Even if you are the best opthalmologist in the world, your chances of getting a US ophthal spot is very small. You would need stellar USMLE scores, US clinical experience, and friends in high places.

I know that well..

US clinical experience

is that through the externship companies?
I know they offer psych, IM, Cardiology & Family Medicine
I don't think they offer Ophthalmology..
is there alternative way for USCE?

Thanks Progdirector ..

If you're asking this question, you have no chance of getting a US Opthal spot.

Honestly, you'd probably need to come to the US and do serious opthalmology research. Probably at least 2-3 years. And that research would need to be at a program that has an opthal residency. Then you'd need to impress them so much that they were willing to let you do some clinical training. And then you'd need to rock the USMLE's. Then you'd apply and hopefully match to that one program. Any fumble along the way and you don't get a spot, and even if you do everything I just said there's a good chance you don't get a spot.

@OP, you're asking non-credible sources. These people don't know what they're talking about. call schools/programs/teaching hospitals and talk to people who will actually point you in the right direction. With a little bit of effort and hard work, I'm sure you can pick up in the states.

I wouldn't listen to anyone here. You're a full fledged physician that's completed residency in your country. It's very different than what most people here are knowledgeable about. I second the idea of contacting programs you're interested in directly.

Thanks Triagepremed ..
Now I am studing USMLE steps very hard..
I will take step 3 as well to enhance my opportunity ..

A lot of my ophthalmologist friends and classmates were able to get some fellowship (ophthalmology subspecialty) in the US and were able to publish some research. Getting into RESIDENCY is a different animal and is almost impossible for a foreign-grad.
