hi folks! Im an IMG interested in ophthal. and although I know its hard, I want to give it a shot. Im currently enrolling in a vol. eye-related research in a UC where Im expected to do lots of LAB work and immuno/histo procedures with good chances of doing a publication.
My Q is would a clinical trail research study be more beneficial for my CV or this LAB-oriented research is equally helpful.
Please give me your feedbacks and suggest otherways for improving my chances.
best,

Regardless, the goal is to publish in a pier-reviewed journal and go to ARVO. THis is not as easy as it sounds and usually depends on a good PI that can guide you through experiments, data analysis and results/discussion. That being said, I think you should do whatever sounds more interesting to you. It's hard to say which carries more weight and I think that outstanding vision scientists can do both clinical studies and basic science. Ultimately, with respect to your application, I think people who interview you for residency will ask you to describe your research for them. If you can do this in an intelligent, well-thought-out way, it will cary you far, especially if you have a publication to back you up. You need to seperate yourself from applicants who did "research" and have no idea what they did, why they did it, or the implications of their results.

Good luck!
